"Women can't be trusted with reproductive rights."

Many "Democratic" senators sold out the rights of women they promised to protect.
The following tutus voted to take away some reproductive rights from a woman and her doctor:

Do you, Senator, agree that women can't be trusted with their reproductive rights?

Quotes

"The arrogance of Republicans on Capitol Hill is finally starting to catch up with them...
This is happening partly because moderate, and even conservative, Republicans are
increasingly standing up to President Bush. Why now, you ask? Because of both their
own approaching elections and Bush's falling poll numbers. Republicans are realizing
that what plays well in Washington might not be popular back home...
--Mary Lynn F. Jones, Attribution

I said it first - since the Democrats are too afraid to stand up to Bush, our only hope was that sane Republicans would stand up to him, and many have. In the opening quote,
Chuck Nagle says they gave Bush too much power. You'll never hear a Democrat say that.

1. LOL!
Love the graphic!

But really, I think due to the expectation that this will be declared unconstitutional in very short order, that the Dems that voted on this did so strictly as a gesture to the less informed people in their districts.

It's the same kind of thing we've seen for years, isn't it? Well, at least that's what people have told me when I bragged that Hutchison (one of my Senators) was giving a good grilling to the FCC on the merger issue, and voted to overturn their ruling. And whaddaya know, DeLay stopped it from getting from point A to point B.

What do you think?

7. I think you may be right that some who voted for it did so to please

some of their constituents since the expectation is that the SCOTUS will soon declare it unconstitutional. A second reason some may have voted for it, thought not really agreeing with it, was to set the ball rolling to get it into the courts and have it decided once and for all.

Welcome to DU, redqueen! :hi:

2. Gephardt is nothing but a Bush enabler tutu wearing DEM
Abortion vote likely to loom in '04 race

Excerpt:
Gephardt voted with the Republican majority last year for legislation that would ban "PB abortion."
In 1996, he voted to overturn then-President Clinton's veto of a similar bill.

Dennis Kucinich has voted to impose restrictions on abortion rights during his four terms in the House.

"It certainly solidifies the position of George Bush and the majority in Congress as being anti-choice,"
said Kathy Sullivan, the Democratic Party chairwoman in New Hampshire. "In terms of the Democrats,
the important thing is that they be pro-choice, not when they became pro-choice."

4. Hold on here, you quote Kathy Sullivan "In terms of the Democrats,

the important thing is that they be pro-choice, not when they became pro-choice."

Yet you also write, "Dennis Kucinich has voted to impose restrictions on abortion rights during his four terms in the House." While true, that statement ignores the fact that is pro-choice NOW, having stopped voting on abortion measures for nearly two years while rethinking his position on the issue.
Dennis Kucinich spoke AGAINST the partial birth abortion ban on the floor of the House, as well as voting against it.

As for Dick Gephardt, I believe that he is generally pro-choice, opposed only to partial birth abortion. Perhaps he would support partial birth abortion in the few rare cases where the life of the mother is at stake.

Why not find out why he voted for the ban? Did some (many?) vote for the ban to get it before the Supreme Court and have it decided once and for all?

Let's not start condemning Dems unless we have all the facts.

5. All Democratic candidates strongly opposed it except for Gephardt
Edited on Wed Oct-22-03 06:59 PM by Woodstock
They issued strong statements against the ban and the cowardly Senate who voted for it.

When you write your letters, a suggestion.

Write to your own senators condemning Daschle. It is given more weight, I think, when it is your senators hearing from you.

Also write to Daschle.

He should step down as leader since he doesn't represent the party platform and has badly let down the vast majority of Democratic women.

For most of women who voted for Gore, choice was the deciding issue on whether to vote for Gore or Bush. And it has been women who give Dems the edge. The DNC knows this, even though it seems sometimes they don't know their posterior from a hole in the ground.

I just posted an article on the forum where people have speculated there will be a backlash against the repukes (and DINO repuke lovers) for this. When choice is threatened, it comes to peoples' attention. People I've talked to all day, even ones you would not think cared much, are alarmed.

The fact is, about half of the country is Democratic, and 60% of the entire country in poll after poll supports Roe v. Wade. There was no excuse for the Dems rolling over and playing dead. If they don't stand up and fight for us, they will be out of the game. The sooner they get the message, the better. More people were turned off by this than turned on. Make it clear to your friends and colleagues that Roe v. Wade is in danger of being overturned.

20. You might want to note that women in the Senate voted for the ban.

There are many women who, like me, are lifelong liberal Democrats but believe the widespread use of abortion is the great moral tragedy of our time. Some of us even post here at DU. Our reasons for concern are not, as you might assume, necessarily related to religion. I'm Catholic, for example, but I converted to Catholicism after I adopted a pro-life view. I was not happy when I realized I could no longer call myself pro-choice but I can't deny my conscience. I believe my opposition to abortion is completely consistent with my opposition to euthanasia, assisted suicide, war, and capital punishment. Other pro-life women I know are Protestants, agnostics, atheists, though of course I know pro-life Catholics, too -- and pro-choice Catholics.)

I am tired of the Democratic Party's insistence that abortion should be unrestricted and its concurrent lack of interest in protecting the rights of unborn babies in any situation. At DU, the Republicans are often accused
of caring only about the unborn, and I would agree that that seems to be the case for many of them. But it can be said that Democrats seem to care only about the women. We need a new approach. We should care about both women and unborn babies.

I have read, by the way, that most people who tell a pollster that they support Roe v. Wade do not support abortion on demand. In other words, if they're then asked in what cases abortion should be legal, the majority reply that it should be legal only when needed to save the life of the mother. If this is true, it supports my opinion that Democratic support for abortion on demand hurts the Democratic party. I don't believe most people want abortion outlawed but a lot of them vote Republican because they think it should be subject to some regulations. A lot of people support a ban on partial birth abortions, for example, without wanting all abortions banned.

If there were some reasonable legal restrictions on abortion, respecting the fact that every abortion ends a human life, both men and women would have to be more cautious about using contraceptives and think more about the consequences of sexual relations, leading to fewer unintended pregnancies and thus a lowered demand for abortion.

"Senate adopts 'partial birth' abortion ban
Plan to block late-term procedures fails to capture veto-proof support

WASHINGTON (AP) - In an atmosphere of unusual tension, the Senate approved legislation Tuesday to ban certain late-term abortions but fell three votes shy of the total needed to override President Clinton's threatened veto.

The Republican-crafted measure cleared on a vote of 64-36, with the current Democratic Leader, Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota, and a predecessor, Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, reversing their earlier opposition and joining supporters.

<snip>

Byrd, who served as Democratic leader for a dozen years ending in 1988, said in a written statement that ''in light of the fact that it is not as rare as some claimed and that there appear to be other alternatives, I cannot, in good conscience, continue to oppose a ban on this specific procedure.'"

http://www.lubbockonline.com/news/052197/senate.htm

He voted in favor of the bill in 1997 too. And although he has been a very vocal critic of the * administration, he is not as liberal as some people here paint him. He has an awful gay rights record for a Democrat, for example.

as you know, most Americans support Roe v. Wade, and as you also know, most Americans are unaware the entire purpose of this bill was to overturn Roe v. Wade

the constituents who elected these DEMOCRATIC Senators know the Democratic platform is pro-choice - they have been badly let down (I can speak for West Virginia, for one, who aren't too happy)

it was up to the Senators to make it clear this was a political grab by right wing extremists to overturn Roe v. Wade and to vote accordingly, and they failed to do so

once the truth becomes known, and the propaganda falls away, be sure to come back and tell me about the extreme minority that supports Roe v. Wade

hint: check out the direction polls are headed in support for the Iraq war and George W. Bush, as the propaganda fell away and the truth became known - too bad it took so long and so many Democrats voted the wrong way

and in this case, the wrong votes will be there in black and white for all to see, too (just ask Kerry about his Iraq vote & how it affected his presidential race)

Should they vote against the wishes of their consituents who elected them?? Or should they pay attention to a small minority of extreme left wing activists?

18. I saw Lincoln almost begging for more federal funding for the
school system in Arkansas some months back. The pukes said no to her. She looked like she was going to cry. She has played ball with them, she is still playing ball with them, and she has met them more than halfway...just so that she can get NOTHING.

I wonder if she is ever going to learn.

Arkansas may be "conservative" but let's face it, "conservatives" DID NOT TO PUT HER INTO OFFICE. WOMEN, BLACKS, POOR PEOPLE AND PEOPLE THAT ARE ENLIGHTENED THOUGHT THAT SHE WAS GOING TO PROTECT THEIR RIGHTS VOTED HER INTO OFFICE.
