Poll question: The woman made her choice when she chose to have sex.
Edited on Wed Oct-22-03 08:11 PM by Selwynn
Do you agree or disagree with this statement:

"The woman made her choice when she chose to have sex?"

YES or No.

I'm not going to try to feign neturality in my first post. The answer is no I completely disagree. In a perfect society, that was not patriarcial wher men, esepcially young men, did not routinely demonstrate manipulative pressure and coersive control over woman, particularly young women, then it would be different.

But as any non-MAN will tell you, that's not the society we live in. Woman, particularly young woman often to not make a free, uncoerced, informed choice for sex. So I vehemantly disagree with the ridiculously obtuse notion that a woman ncessarily made her "choice" when she had sex. This argument should not be used to be anti-abortion. It should not be used to say that the father should be able to overrule the choice of the mother for or against abortion.

2. Cavewomen, maybe.
Things are a little different now. Women have choices.

3. As much as the man
made HIS choice when he decided to have sex. I don't know why it all has to be on the woman. She didn't get pregnant by herself.

4. The point is this statement is used to justify....
anti-abortion stances "the woman should be responsible for her choice to have sex and the consquences of it" :puke:

and also, used to justify that the father should have veto power in the decision of a woman to have an abortion. :puke:

5. Ridiculous
What about birth control? If she used birth control and it failed then she obviously didn't "make the choice."

13. If the argument works to begin with,
she still knew the risks.

7. Yes and no
Made the choice to have sex, not get pregnant. Using this to justify anti-abortion stances is like telling a car wreck victim, "well, you made the choice to drive to work today".

12. Getting pregnant is like a car wreck...
Sounds like the beginning of a pretty good stand up routine!

10. great, when they can carry to child to birth
we'll talk about giving them a choice. When they have hormonal changes that stick with them for life, when they get stretch marks, hemroids, siatica and vericose veins then they can do with their bodies as they like.

11. No - men made their choice
women have the discretion to change their minds.

14. I guess the problem is they both chose to have sex but only one
HAS to be pregnant if that choice produces a fertilized egg.

15. Definitely NO!
There are many things that can go wrong with contraceptives. For instance the pill is null and void when antibiotics are taken with it. Alot of GYN's forget to tell this to their patients when they prescribe the pill. I worked as a counselor with women facing unplanned pregnancies and I saw many girls who had no idea how they got pregnant, UNTIL I asked, "did you take ANY antibiotics during the time you were on the pill?" Their reponse 9 out of 10 times, "yes, but what has that got to do with anything?" Many just don't know this.

They also don't know that they need to double up on their protection IF they are taking antibiotics while on the pill.

16. In Fundyville, she's never had any sex education, so how can she choose?
Those condoms are useless, too. They don't stop anything. That evidence is tainted. Abstinence is the only way. Sex bad. Joy bad.

Learn to hate your body just as we do ours, then punish yourself by having angersex and pay for it endlessly.

Everything you can see, feel or touch is wrong; only the hereafter that is unproven and unrevealed is real. Good is bad. Pleasure is sin. Agony is bliss.

Wonder why there are so many mental breakdowns?

17. You're confusing the issue
Woman, particularly young woman often to not make a free, uncoerced, informed choice for sex.

If a woman is coerced or somehow otherwise forced into having sex, then the woman really hasn't made a choice at all, has she?

If, however, the woman just likes to have sex and accidentally gets herself knocked up, I have to say that it's HER problem. Women have 100% choice when it comes to their bodies...the choice to keep or abort, the choice to sleep with a guy or not, the choice to protect herself or not, and the choice about whether to pick a decent guy, or a big hunk of meat.

If she chooses a well hung slab who simply looks at her as another recreational hole and gets herself knocked up, she's ultimately responsible for the choices she made and for the consequences of those choices. If she doesn't like the outcome, she always has the choice to get rid of the problem.

Men should have the same choice. Absolute equality, absolutely.

18. a lot of young girls have babies so they can love someone and have
someone to love. after all these years of pretending
that no is enough, we have HUGE amounts of unwanted
preggies because NO ONE knows what to do. The number
of young girls I have talked to who have ZERO clue
about birth control, or figure they don't need it because
they won't get preggie is amazing.

Having come up through the days when men told you
what to do and a woman had three career choices:
teaching, nursing, motherhood, I am inclined to say
if you can't get pregnant yourself, then shut your
trap.

But then, that is my experience with this issue. :)

20. Having sex no more obliges you to have children
than being exposes to the TB bacterium obliges you to avoid antibiotics and have tuberculosis.
