Iowa's 5th District Congressman Steve King said Democrats who bitterly criticize the Bush administration for pursuing the war in Iraq are essentially giving "aid and comfort to the enemy" and said he believes the naysayers will pay a political price for their stance.

Recapping his weekend trip to Iraq, King spoke about how many Iraqis have satellite dishes broadening their world via the ability to hear international news. He said his "nightmare" is that the comments by Democratic Party presidential candidates, particularly Howard Dean, describing a "failed policy in Iraq," will be heard by Iraqis and other terrorists in the vicinity, giving them encouragement.

Such messages, King said, are "being beamed into Iraq. ... When they see that on their television, you tell me, are they going to build more bombs or less? Are they going to have more or less courage to plant those bombs and detonate those bombs and kill Americans? I believe that that gives aid and comfort to the enemy and those positions are anti-American." Further, he said, to "undermine the efforts of our troops, I believe is unconscionable and they should be held accountable for it ... I think the voters will hold them accountable."

Aid and comfort to the enemy is what's known colloquially as "Treason." (US Const III.3)

"Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court. "

It's one thing when Mann Coulter uses this phrase to sell more books for kooks. But when a US Congressman starts throwing out this kind of legalese, it needs to be taken VERY seriously.

They're testing the waters for a new McCarthyism. Dollars to donuts we WILL see at least one opposition player brought to these charges by this time next year.
