Lieberman backs Jeb Bush move to keep woman alive
WASHINGTON -- Democrat Joseph I. Lieberman sided yesterday with Republican Governor Jeb Bush of Florida for ordering a feeding tube reinserted into a brain-damaged woman, saying government must "honor life."

In a wide-ranging interview with the Associated Press, the presidential candidate said, "I feel very strongly that we ought to honor life and we ought not to create a system where people are being deprived of nutrition or hydration in a way that ends their lives."

1. the hypocrisy here is breath-taking
'honor life' but screw the uninsured. :wtf:

It occured to me this morning... they're passing laws that saw hospitals don't have to treat the uninsured, but then they pull crap like this.

3. Of course he does...
From a great article at the Village Voice, link below:

Snip:

Joseph Lieberman adds nothing to the Democrats' chances in 2004. He does, however, take things away. In fighting to the finish and losing the nomination, he will have irreparably weakened the winner. If he wins it, he will suck out something precious: the active enthusiasm of the unwealthy that is a center-left party's only natural advantage against a party of money, the Republicans.

How many Democrats will be willing to work their hearts out for the guy single-handedly responsible, in his kid-glove non-investigation as chair of the Senate Investigations Subcommittee, for the Bush administration emerging from the Enron scandal scot-free? How many, for the man whose most enduring work in the Senate was preserving the favorite accounting dodge, the non-expensing of stock options, of disgraced high-tech companies like Enron and Worldcom?

The senator from Connecticut must withdraw. He should do it fast.

4. watched michael moore this morning
on democracy now

he said we need to get away from this "anyone but bush" attitude because it makes it look like we don't really have any good candidates. he said what we need now is an "anyone but lieberman" campaign!

loved it.

7. Well, I think these are a case by case basis
This woman has been vegetative for over 10 years. She has not spoken a word, nor shown any ability at rational movement. She is capable of blinking and some movement, but dozens of doctors have found those movements to be totally involuntay.

So, in this circumstance, I would say what they were doing was correct.

10. I do too
I don't think we watch people starve to death in A,erica and do nothing.

If it was withholding treatment, I'd be okay with it, but withholding food - no.

5. And this should be a surprise to us, how?
Explain how we should be shocked by Joe Lieberman being a hypocritical twit?

Sorry. Couldn't help myself. Pointing out that Lieberman is a dork is just second nature to me by now.

Thanks for the post. Just a little more mortar to make the wall higher...

11. WTF do you know about it?
For all you know Terry Schiavo lay in her husband's arms one night and begged him to never to allow her to continue life in a persistent, vegative state. The law on this is crystal clear; and Randall Terry, Jeb Bush, and the Florida legislature should all butt the fuck out.

There are conflicting reports here. Yeah I do think the husband's a scumbag.

15. Her parents are scumbags too
They welcome support from Freepers with open arms, and even though the doctors say her problems were caused by a deficiency of some sort (ISTR it being a potassium deficiency, but I could be wrong) they continue to claim that hubby poisoned their daughter.

13. How can you call him a scumbag?
Hell, he turned down nearly a million dollars to go through with this. If he were a scumbag, he'd have accepted the money and divorced. Instead he stood by his principles and did what he believed was right.

12. What a joke!!!
This issue is what originally brought me to this site. I'm sick of these rightwing idiots playing god. I'll just have to lump Lieberman in with the others. This issue has me steaming.

16. Good for Joe.
We have laws that forbid the killing of a DOG by witholding water and food. This poor girl deserves no less protection.

19. We also have laws that allow you to have a DOG put down...
...when it's suffering. This poor girl deserves no less protection.

(see how that works both ways?)

21. By denying the dog water and food?
I would beg to differ. Dying of thirst is one of the most painful deaths.

I just don't want her to suffer.

20. ...and if the dog is in a vegetative state?
I think you'll find that electrocution is the normal treatment for this.

I don't have a dog in this race, but comparing a human to a dog is a pretty sad thing to see. There is no valid comparison there.

23. It is, as you say, "sad" when you treat a dog better than a human
No offense but it is an entirely valid comparison when you know that pet owners are legally forbidden from starving a dog. Something about cruelty to animals. I say we should be just as concerned about cruelty to humans.

26. Impossible
Her brain is irreparably damaged. Brain cells have died, and if technology could bring the dead to life, then letting her die would not be a problem. They could just use that technology, and bring her back to life.
