Alamoudi, Norquist's Islamic Institute patron, bankrolled terrorists
Edited on Thu Oct-23-03 02:09 PM by Hoppin_Mad
The story is starting to get legs. I hope it turns into a marathoner.

Another Bushie besides James Baker and the Carlyle Crew tied to terrorists.

I wonder how many more are mentioned in the " 28 pages" ?

5. That's not the goal
Sure, we'll give him the perp walk, but first we need to make him squeal like a pig about his GOOD FRIEND, Karl Rove.

What with the utter failure of the Iraq quagmire, the Wilson/Plame treason, and now running Islamic terrorism from the West Wing, Rove has doubled his late night Twinkie and Dr. Pepper intake. He's sweating, and I sincerely hope that an ulcer is eating its way through his stomach lining even now.

6. Notice where the link is from?
The Center for Security Policy.

Frank Gaffeney is doing a takedown on Norquist and Rove and, possibly, Junior Himself.

In other words, it sounds like the PNAC is starting to cut and run. I do believe Realpolitick is right.

This gets very, very ugly from here on out for the Bush admin.

7. Center for Security Policy is a RW Group with many snipes at anti-Iraq
Invasion Protestors saying we are funded by "out of favor groups."

So, I wonder when they are making these ties.....pretty much saying they warned Bush not to get too close to Almoudi, after, of course, saying Clinton was already to close to Almoudi.

The whole thing does sound like infighting, but I can't accept that anyone is ready to take out Shrub/PNAC. I worry there's something not good in all this for us Dems...

This group is not going to go down easily with just Norquist flap, as sinister as that whole thing is.

But, "realpolitik's" points are too good not to just savor for now.

9. What if it's just the opposite
Yes, Gaffeney is the head of the Center for Security Policy, and he's definitely a PNAC'er.

What if the PNAC is trying to do the takedown, sacrificing some of their own in the process? It fits right in with Realpolitik's brilliant analysis. Whichever way it is, it feels like a HUGE power struggle, and one that won't just slip to the back pages of the newspaper.

And yeah, I don't think any of it bodes well for Democrats. It almost sounds as if they're completely ignored in the process, and the New New World Order v 2.0 will be decided without any regard to Democrats.

Wake up, Democratic congresspeople! Do something!

More questions: who pointed Justice in the right direction? Was it career Justice people and their career friends at the FBI? Surely Ashcroft and Mueller had nothing to do with it.

Interesting times.

8. This should be THE BIG ONE. We'll see.
This may be the biggest story of the year, if it gets the traction it deserves, so I'm bumping it up.

Summary of what is known so far:

-Karl Rove and Grover Norquist are dear friends. Rove attends Norquist's weekly policy meeting where they decide how to take over the world, a la Pinky and the Brain.

-Grover Norquist founded the Islamic Institute

-The Islamic Institute received seed money from Abdurahman Alamoudi.

-Abdurahman Alamoudi is a vocal supporter of Hamas and Hezbollah

-Alamoudi’s Palm Pilot included the names and numbers of six designated global terrorists

-Alamoudi recruited the tranlators at Gitmo who have been arrested for stealing secrets. Apparently CIA interrogation logs were stolen and given to the Saudis.

-Alamoudi met with Karl Rove in the White House in 2001.

Also of interest is that Frank Gaffeney of PNAC fame is apparently orchestrating a takedown of Grover Norquist. There's the catty correspondence, but I'm wondering if it was time to make Norquist and Rove and possibly even Bush into sacrificial lambs. Purely speculation on my part, but there's definitely something going on.

Let's add to this list. Let's build a timeline. Let's look at motive (e.g., why was Norquist so interested in starting an Islamic foundation in the first place? One could hypothesize that if LIHOP is true, the White House needs to have a way to get in touch with their Al Qaeda buddies).

By the way, I had all of this stuff properly sourced, but my pc rebooted itself before I could post. It all comes from The Washington Post, MSNBC, and the Snellius thread (thanks, Snellius!).

18. Why PNAC
PNAC has stated its displeasure with Rumsfeld and the Chimp administration for bungling the colonization of Iraq. They are likely annoyed that the Iraq debacle has put the seven nations campaign has been put on hold for the near future.

Further, PNAC has a natural reason to dislike Rove as he blocked PNACoid efforts to have the armed forces march directly into Syria as part of the same offensive thrust that captured Iraq.

I'd really like to know:

Why did Norquist have an interest in starting The Islamic Institute?

I mean, we have a lilly-white right-winger, staunch ally of GWB. Why would he want to be the founder of this institute?

Please provide

a. the real, unfiltered answer that you'll never see on the news, and,

b. the cover answer. What will right-wing pundits say when they spin this?

Thanks.

16. Reading the tea leaves
The GOP has been interested in securing the vote of the growing Islamic population for quite some time. Norquist's involvement was likely part of the ongoing attempt to secure the support of a demographic group that isn't shrinking. Chances are, the people on the GOP side of the fence were too busy drooling over getting new voters to look very closely at just what was going on behind the scenes in the Islamic leadership groups run by the GOP's good friends in the House of Saud.

37. Here's my shot at it...
Why did Norquist have an interest in starting The Islamic Institute?

1. They have money.
2. Norquist believes, and has presented them, as a group that shares republican so-called “traditional” and "family" values. (Imagine that. Republicans sharing values with Islamic extremists. Whoda thunk it?)

From Josh Marshall, 25 Oct: ”My sense has always been that Norquist got into the Islam business back in the late 1990s when it looked like a growth industry for the Republican coalition.

“He had a lot of ideas about Muslims being natural cultural conservatives and free marketeers, and so forth. This three-cheers for Muslim capitalism! conference in Doha is a prime example.

“His 'Islamic Institute' is run out the offices of his main operation, 'Americans for Tax Reform.' (I just checked the website and apparently it's now 'The Islamic Free Market Institute.' So, you know, Mohamed von Hayek.)

“In any case, after 9/11 came along he probably realized that he might have gotten tied up with at least a few questionable characters. But he was too proud to admit he'd been naive and then just dug himself deeper.

“That's always been my sense. But when people start getting arrested, maybe it's time to give the whole thing a closer look.”

<http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/index.html#articles>

I think that Josh is right and wrong. Norquist may have been spooked by 9/11, but "...Grover Norquist’s best friend is Karl Rove, the White House chief of staff, and apparently Norquist was able to fix things. He got extreme right wing Muslim people to be the gatekeepers in the White House. That’s why moderate Americans couldn’t speak out after 9/11. Moderate Muslims couldn’t get into the White House because Norquist’s friends were blocking their access."
<http://www.msnbc.com/news/984616.asp?cp1=1>

And don't overlook that ethnic voter thing either.
”To be sure, the bulk of Norquist’s work on behalf of American Muslims merely falls in line with the American tradition of targeting ethnic voters - a tradition that goes back to the days of urban machine politics and before. To that end, Norquist and Khaled Saffuri, the executive director of the Islamic Institute and former director of government relations at the American Muslim Council, brokered meetings between Muslim and Republican leaders during the 2000 presidential campaign”.
<http://www.bostonphoenix.com/boston/news_features/this_just_in/documents/01848515.htm>

What will right-wing pundits say when they spin this?

I am probably wrong, but I think this smoking gun is so hot they won't touch it. This is treason at very high levels. It is far more than the Wilson leak – FAR MORE!!

This is the HOT site. <http://www.msnbc.com/news/984616.asp?cp1=1> Scroll down and read the part by John Loftus, and when you do, remember those Army Chaplains that were arrested in Guantanamo as spies. Read that, and maybe you can tell me if you think the RW pundits should be shaking in the boots.

41. Well over a year ago
I read that he had pursued the Arab American community to try to convince leaders to convince their constituents that the conservative values of Islam matched those of the Republicans.

I think Norquist was trying to set up another sort of politicization of religion to pull automatic republican voters in the way Robertson had been able to do with the Christian Coalition.

Imo, it was about trying to create a 'super majority' (through various constituencies) for the GOP that would make the dominance in Washington impentrable. He is part of the freemarket neo-cons - who sees the value of manipulating the social conservatives to get them to convince their constituents that the two are one in the same.

Nothing, imo, has been more effective in recent years for the right than the ability to merge religion and politics at the most local level - getting preaching from the pulpit to match Jesus to the GOP to the point where voting for a democrat is likened to voting for Satan. I think Norquist was trying to do more of the same in the Muslim community.

But it damned well ought to be read by everyone.

It may be a little painful for some to open the real possibility the arrest of Guantanamo personnel are apprehensions of real agents, but that such agents can be tied back directly to the most reactionary political operatives of the right ought to be some consolation for that.

43. Yes, Magistrate. Good point. When I initially heard of the Chaplain
arrests at Gitmo, I thought it was Asscroft persecuting muslims. And, I'm so cynical about these "squatters in the WH" that I don't trust or believe anything they do.

But, if this ties them back to Norquists efforts to support terrorists groups then I will reconsider.

I just hope this goes somewhere. It's hard enough keeping it up on GD for people to read. If the Press doesn't push and Congress doesn't support going after that viper Norquist, then we are indeed doomed poltically and as a nation.

Thanks for your perspective!

40. The McKinney angle
The really sickening thing is that when Alamoudi contributed to Cynthia McKinney's campaign, it was played up as "McKinney Ties to Terrorism"! Alamoudi's group supported Bush in 2000! And this attack on McKinney was after Bush had invited Alamoudi of all people to represent Muslims at the National Cathedral ceremony right after Sept. 11 (on Sept. 15, I believe, the one that ended with the Battle Hymn of the Republic, the launching of the Crusade).
