Setting the Record Straight
Campaign Manager Joe Trippi issued the following statement today:

BURLINGTON--"Governor Dean's opponents have been attacking him and distorting his positions for months. I suspect this is because they would rather attack than talk about why, with a combined three-quarters of a century in Washington, D.C., they have delivered few real results. When you look at the field of candidates there is a clear contrast between a record of results and a record of rhetoric. As both a doctor and a Governor, Howard Dean's record speaks for itself. He delivered healthcare to thousands with his own hands, provided a prescription drug benefit for seniors and healthcare for children, he increased environmental protections and balanced the budget.

"We know the American people understand the difference between results and rhetoric, and when other candidates distort Governor Dean's record of results--as they have for months--we're going to set the record straight."

As you can see by the headlines below, the other campaigns made a strategic decision to attack Governor Dean after he surged ahead of them in the polls. Below are three pages of headlines on these attacks. Also, click on links to Governor Dean's ads below and see them for yourself.

1. So What's Dean's Excuse for Slamming Clark?
You'll note that there isn't one headline in there about Clark slamming Dean.

because Dean has actual evidence to back up his claims and everyone else has to rely on distortions.

7. Good strategy.
I bet Trippi had that list compiled LONG before they started running the ads. It's pretty hard to accuse Dean of being the first to attack when you can throw out a 2 page list of newspaper headlines where the other candidates attacked Dean.

It is good strategy but most of the dates are very current so the list wasn't created to long ago.

8. I am really happy to see this!
His new ads bode well for how he we react to fire from the Bush camp (i.e. fight back).

Glad Dean is not sitting around for months taking body blows like Kerry.

11. Exactly...
...once again, the Dean campaign is demonstrating that it will handily deal with attacks by presenting a strong counter. This mornings "Dean first to attack with new ads" BS was hysterical. Again and again, we see some attempting to use the same kinds of attacks, the same methodologies of distortion, as were used against Gore. But the Dean team knows how to run a good counter and will do so just as effectively against Bush.

12. Actually, I don't like the strategy.
(disclaimer: I'm a Dean volunteer).

Dean is leading everywhere he is campaigning. He is gaining in national polls. Whatever attacks he is suffering from do not seem, to me, to be hurting him that much. This explanation by Trippi just throws more fuel on the fire.

I'd like to see a little more finesse here.

Unless they know something I don't, which is likely.

13. Turnabout is fair play.
The problem for Kerry and Gep is that they picked a fight with the wrong guy. Dean will only get stronger through this. He wants the limelight and this gives it to him. He wants the image of being tough on the Washington insiders, this gives it to him. Kerry and Gep are dancing to Dean's lead.

Dean also has no problem standing toe to toe swapping blows with these guys. He wants the image of a fighter and this plays into his hands.

It's a shame really, had Kerry and Gep only been fighting Bush* for a living and ignoring Dean, they would be much better off today.

15. Precisely!
"It's a shame really, had Kerry and Gep only been fighting Bush* for a living and ignoring Dean, they would be much better off today"

Dean wouldn't have had the pull if they had been doing their jobs to begin with. We were starved for someone like Dean! At least I was and it turns out to my Delight that a Few other People were, too!
