Expert on foreign policy, especially the Middle East.

Although I have yet to read it, I believe his new book is about the perils of attempting to install "democracy" in the MidEast, an area of the world that has hardly ever seen it in practice.

I read "future of freedom" he was not against regime change for Iraq

So that automatically makes him a neocon/racist/warmonger to about half the people who post on this board

He is my preference for Sec. of State in an Edwards(or Kerry or Clark) administration

4. He is the "left guy" they put on "This Week" with George Stephanopolous

He isn't too bad, but he is more center than left IMHO. He really tore George Will up over the Lawrence Vs Texas decision. Just ate him alive. It was a beautiful thing!

while i don't see him as left wing liberal, i don't see him as conservative either. he opposes bush tax cuts, supports gay rights, affirmative action. his disagreements with george will aren't with a different conservative view usually, but with a different view that is liberal. such as gay rights.

5. He's quite intelligent...

though people on this board will probably call him a repub. Honestly, he seems like a moderate. He's the editor of Newsweek International and is an expert on foreign policy and security. He's also a Muslim Indian-American -- his dad is prominent Indian Historian Rafiq Zakaria. Fareed has been suggested by some as a possible future sec. of state.

He has a strong understanding of the Muslim world and is generally critical of Bush's foreign policy. However, he did support the Iraq War, though not the way that Bush fought it. Regardless of whether you disagree w/ him or not on that issue, his essays in Newsweek on the Muslims world -- "Why They Hate Us" or "Why America Scares the World" are dead on.

and his essays are usually pretty well written. I like him a lot.

6. foreign policy expert

i think he teaches a class on international politics. he writes for newsweek and others on it. politically he seems like a moderate to liberal though he says he is independent. he is also a muslim and supports gay rights and other liberal issues. this beats the stereotype many have of muslims.he has k icked george will's ass many times on "this week" and when writing on issues having to do with islam he comes across as very objective. i think he would make a good secretary of state even though he is kind of young (i think around 40 years old)he is talented enough to do a way better job than most including colin powell and many of the others who have been sec of state. do a search on him and read up on his other articles. he is a very good writer.

Dr. Zakaria has been involved, either as a contributor or as the editor of Foreign Affairs ("the blue one with 'Foreign' in the title, often mixed up with 'Foreign Policy') for the last decade.

He's got some interesting ideas about liberal vs. illiberal democracy (that's his latest area of interest).

A fast riser, cogent thinker and writer, though I do not agree with all his arguements regarding democracy.

when we were both guests the program with (then) Sam and Cokie on "This Week" during the Afghan War campaign. He's an extremely sharp guy...pensive, not given to bouts of ego and bravura like me!

right or left doesn't matter---this guy is a bonafide expert, not a political hack.
He is good reading. I hear he has a book out now, I will look for it.
