U.S. troops in Iraq "legitimate targets"?
"However, I don't support the occupation of Iraq. U.S. soldiers are enforcing that occupation. The Iraqi people have a right to violently resist occupation. I'm sorry, but I'm not rooting for U.S. soldiers in Iraq. I wish that no one had to die. But U.S. troops in Iraq are Redcoats. They're legitimate targets." -- Durutti

I see stuff get locked by the mods all the time because it's too controversial or whatever. And this vicious blather hardly raises an eyelid. What a Freeper wet dream.

Makes me sick that some on this board feel this way.

1. We are the occupying force. I don't think that Durutti meant that
he/she would like for American soldiers to die (NONE of us DUers would like that).

2. Amen
there are dozens of sickeningly fringe hard left propaganda posts here every couple of hours.

This board is misused entirely and it drives away productive sensible activists

3. Of course

Of course they are legitimate targets.

They are a foreign army occupying and ruling a country, following an illegal invasion.

Furthermore, Iraqis are aware of a long history of this sort of thing in their country.

Americans in Iraq are every bit as legitimate as targets as Israeli soldiers in the occupied territories.

(This is not to blame the soldiers or hope that they are harmed. It is simply an observation of reality.)

4. Depends on your viewpoint
They are legitimate targets for the Iraqis.

Obviously Americans feel differently about it.

5. It depends on your POV, Rider....
To some folks over here, they're "Saviours of Democracy" to others, they're poor Pawns in a greedy old white man's chess game.

And to the folks who actually LIVE in Iraq, they're occupying invaders.Stop and consider for a moment how YOU would feel if there were foreign troops who didn't speak your language standing in front of your home with guns.

Now can you understand?

7. If there was a massive crime wave going on I don't think I'd mind.
I can imagine what would happen if the troops left. It would be horrific and do you know who'd be blamed? Not Bush, but America. That being said, I say get the hell out of Iraq. They aren't worth the death of one more American life.

13. How patronizing is your tone.
Suggesting that all Iraqis view the Americans as invaders is just as narrow-minded as the Repugs suggesting that they all view the Americans as liberators. Truth is, many WERE overjoyed when the Americans rolled in, just as many were outraged. This is simply a dispassionate observation of reality. There is no single Iraqi viewpoint.

That being said, I doubt very much that the people conducting these attacks are either A) non-Baathists or B) non-Islamic fundamentalists. I think, generally speaking, they are people whose motives are not pure. Sorry, but I have a hard time believing that those people conducting attacks against American troops are good-hearted Iraqi patriots who want to oust the Americans and set up a pluralistic democracy that respects human rights.

6. What are you riled up about?
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 06:09 PM by Uzybone
do you think the iraqi resistance fighters should ignore US troops and target the UN or thier fellow citizens exclusively. Just like Iraqi insurgents are legit targets to our troops the same goes vice versa. I pray everyday that we loose no more troops, but saying that Iraqis view an occupying enemy as targets in a war is hardly controversial. Now the stuff about attacks on cops I feel is ridiculous and should be condemned, but Iraqi isnt about cops and rioters, its a war zone.

8. Our troops are not there for a vacation, you know.
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 06:16 PM by liberal_veteran
They are occupying a conquered country. Isn't it a bit silly to say our troops are not legitimate targets for the resistance? In any war, the opposite side's military is ALWAYS a legitimate target.

Nobody wants to see our troops in harm's way, but it's a fact of life that in a war, soldiers are a target.

11. so you should root for more violence?
the people MURDERING our troops and Iraqis are not wrong in your mind?

You people are sick. The US government, both democrat and republican has never been as evil and authoritarian as Saddams was. Whether or not you apposed the war, it's unjustified to root agaisnt peace now. They are fighting a guerrilla war that is delaying the US-Briton coallition from becoming a UN/Nato coallition, and delaying Iraqui's from running the country on there own further down the road.

Read some non-hard-leftist news every now and then, it won't kill you

9. Blame Bush
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 06:13 PM by Padraig18
HE instituted an illegal war and sent troops in to ilegally occupy a nation that was in now way a threat to the US. I'm sorry American soldiers die there, but should the Iraqis just 'get over it'? Would YOU, if the situation were reversed?

14. You seem to be going out of your way to pick a fight...
First off, why didn't you stay in the original thread and argue your point there? Why did you feel it necessary to create another thread?

Second, you may have forgotten that we had NO REASON to invade Iraq. If you can think of a legitimate reason for us having done so, you need to contact the Bushies because they're getting really desperate to find one.

Third, since we did indeed invade Iraq that makes our troops legitimate targets of the Iraqis trying to defend themselves. That's a fact. Period. How would you feel about Americans killing people that invaded and occupied our country? Wouldn't you think that those enemy troops would be legitimate targets to us?

Fourth, if you believe that stating facts about the REAL situation in Iraq is "viscious blather', that's YOUR problem, not durutti's.

Finally, I personally hate the thought of Americans and Iraqis dying to further the goals of the Bushies and the people that support them. There is absolutely no reason for American troops to be in Iraq, and if the truth were known, there probably isn't a good reason for Americans to have attacked Afghanistan either. It personally makes me sick to think that anyone feels that our attacks in the Middle East were justified.
