Presidential Weakness Reported -WP/Milbank

President Bush is a man of steely discipline, but it appears the commander in chief has not gained complete mastery over his sweet tooth.

In a new book by author Stephen Mansfield, "The Faith of George W. Bush," the following passage appears on page 173: "Aides found him face down on the floor in prayer in the Oval Office. It became known that he refused to eat sweets while American troops were in Iraq, a partial fast seldom reported of an American president."

Seldom reported -- and apparently little observed. When the White House sent out the shared "pool report" of Bush's roundtable interview with reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Australia, it became apparent that the president had fallen off the candy wagon.

"And he was relaxed. Very relaxed," was the description. "As a reporter began to ask about the Middle East . . . Mr. Bush popped a butterscotch Lifesaver in his mouth. He smacked the candy as he said: 'Middle East, that's right.' "

6. I prayed like that when I was 16
I drank a whole bottle of MD20/20 because hey, you know, it tasted sort of like Kool Aid. I prayed at the toilet that I would die quickly and be out of my misery.

10. Actually, that's a characteristic
of alcoholics. Very many have a 'sweet tooth'. And even after they choose sobriety, they still continue to eat a lot of candy.

Plus in Busch's case, I'm wondering if he hasn't gone back to drinking? There has been an occasional thread which crops up from time to time. Readers have mentioned that he "looks drunk", or he slurs, or looks rested after looking like crap for a while, or he drops the dog, or makes odd comments.

So I don't know what it means. We'll just have to keep an eye on him and look for clues.

11. Bush* declares "Friday night" henceforth to be National Day of Prayer
So when he credited becoming a "born-again Christian" with getting him to kick his alcoholism, that was just Orwellian doublespeak too, like Clear Skies, and Healthy Forests? It all makes sense now.
