Iraq in disarray over Ramadan, as Middle East countries begin fasting

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraqi Muslims approached the holy month of Ramadan in disarray with Sunnis in Baghdad and the restive tribal belt to its west starting the traditional daytime fast even as coalition-run media urged all believers to wait another day. snip

Anti-US clerics accused the country's post-Saddam television, the Iraqi Media Network, of kowtowing to the heathen Americans, adding that the US action would only lead to an upsurge in attacks on US troops in Sunni areas.

"Their announcement is illicit and if they had enough courage, they should admit their mistake in public and announce Ramadan for Sunday," said Sheikh Abdel Salam al-Kubaissi.

"We tried calling the television, but a drunken person answered and did not understand anything," he said.

The divisions are the works of "an ill-intended person seeking to embarrass the Sunnis and show that they are divided," Kubaissi added.

5. to be fair, the date is disputed
Lebanese Ayatallah al-Udma Sayyid Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah stated that Ramadan began on Monday this year. Different teams of watchers produced slightly different dates, it seems. The Saudis & Shias never agree on anything else, why should this be any different...

7. That may be...
but Ramadan begins at the first sliver of the new moon. It's up to them to decide when that sliver appears.

Some Christians have different Christmas and Easter dates-- I doubt any of them would think kindly of a non-believer telling them which is the right one.

6. separation of church/state
If we had a different Administration that actually respected this concept, they would have simply announced the government had no position and Muslims should worship in accordance with their cleric. Since these morons can't figure this out here at home, I'm not surprised they screwed it up in Iraq too.
