Madison Avenue heralds the tactic as Òstealth marketing,Ó while critics contend it is deceptive and unethical.

Viewers can decide for themselves when 60 MinutesÕ hidden cameras capture paid salespeople talking up the merits of products like video games, cell phone cameras and cigarettes to people who have no idea they are getting a sales pitch.

A pretty young woman asks a man for a light at a bar and then urges him to try a new cigarette called ÒLegal,Ó in one pitch caught on hidden camera. In another, a young man uses a video game device on his laptop computer in a coffee shop, offering curious bystanders a turn. The ÒsalespeopleÓ do not reveal theyÕve been hired to hawk the products. 60 Minutes was invited along to record the Òbrand interactionsÓ by the productsÕ makers, Freedom Tobacco and Essential Reality.
