Pretty much all of the major candidates have the same position on Israel. You're just singling out Lieberman because he's Jewish.

He is rabidly pro-Israel.

Hence his total support for Bush's oil war.

53. "Rabidly pro-Israel"
Do you have any proof for this? Is he more pro-Israel than Kerry or Edwards or Kennedy or Clinton or Feinstein or Boxer? Have his votes on any bills or resolutions involving Israel differed AT ALL from those of most other Democratic legislators? What makes him "rabidly" pro-Israel? is it the May 2, 2002 Senate resolution supporting Israel that he voted for? Guess what? Almost every Democratic senator, including everyone named above (and other Likudniks ... like Wellstone) voted for that.

You want to refute the charge that you're singling out Lieberman because he's a Jew? Show how his positions are substantively different on the issue of Israel from all those Democrats who you DON'T condemn who ALSO supported the war and Israel (i.e. Baucus, Bayh, Biden, Breaux, Cantwell, Carnahan, Carper, Kerry, Edwards, Clinton, Cleland, Daschle, Dodd, Dorgan, Feinstein, Harkin, Johnson, Kohl, Landrieu, Lincoln, Miller, Nelson (FL), Nelson (NE), Reid, Rockefeller, Schumer, Torricelli). Every one of these Democratic Senators voted to support Israel in its fight against terrorism AND voted for the war.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=107&session=2&vote=00237

What makes his position different from Bill Clinton's or Al Gore's? Other than the fact that Lieberman's a Jew, that is.

Nor is the United States. Do you really want other countries looking at us and blaming us for a party's actions?

19. I do
he has as much if not more political courage to speak his mind and not pander and throw red meat to audiences.

Being political is being unfrank and dancing around what you believe. He doesn't do that. Every other serious candidate does to a degree, and the candidate who basically say's that he is like that(a straight talker/shoot from the hip type) is actually least like that.

27. Me too -
he's not my first or second or third choice for the nomination, but I thought he was a good running mate during the 2000 campaign. Contrary to what others will have you believe, I don't think he PURPOSELY lost the Vice Presidential debate and having watched the Russert interview re: Military ballots, it would have been difficult for anyone else to say anything different to what he said.

I disagree with him on a lot of things but at least he is consistent. He was saying for months before the lead up to the war that Iraq should be invaded and even though I disagree with him, he still stands by what he said then. And he also said that it's easy to cut and run when times are tough but it's harder to stick to your original principles, which is what he's doing now.

Say you disagree with his positions. Say he's not your choice for the nomination. Anything else is usually uncalled for.

35. How can you expect him to exit the race?
The guy is second or third in a lot of national polls. He's in double digits among the African American vote, something he shares only with Al Sharpton. It's a bit unreasonable to ask him to bow out now when there's a good chance he could still win. Personally, I don't want him to, and I don't think it's going to happen, but I do believe it's entirely unreasonable to ask him to exit right now.

I have no problem that he's religious; but does he need to trumpet his faith in an almost Bush-like manner? Not to mention family values, wtf does that mean? Makes him sound like he's running on some sort of fundie platform.

I would vote for Joe if it came down to Joe vs. George, but I'd have to hold my nose and clutch a talisman as I entered the voting booth. I just can't quite get over how easily he capitulated to the Repubs in 2000. I think Gore would have stood his ground if Joe had shown a bit more courage. Maybe I've got my facts wrong.

Doesn't matter -- he won't be the one.

29. I like Joe Lieberman
I believe that he is an extremely decent human being who is doing his very best to make his country and the world a better place. I don't agree with him on every issue (that goes for every Presidential candidate) but I respect him for taking difficult and often unpopular stances, offering reasons for his positions, and sticking by them. I also respect him for the many years of service that he has given his country. He was right about one thing in tonight's debate. He is most definitely an independent minded Democrat. That will, in all likelihood, be a quality that disqualifis him from winning the nomination in today's political climate but it is a quality that I, personally, find admirable.

There are a number of reasons why I would hesitate to support him for the Presidency and I doubt that I will be voting for him but, on the other hand, I do not think that he would be the total disaster that some of the other candidates would be.

I may not agree with him, I may not vote for him but the man would be welcome to have a seat at the table in my home which, for me, is the measure of whether or not I like someone.

42. Newsflash
DU is not representative of the Democratic party and is most definitely not representative of the American voting public in general.

Dean has described his opponents as "Bush-lite." The problem is that, as a reaction, some are becoming "Dean-lite." The notable mainstream exceptions are Lieberman and Gephart. It is entirely possible that, if Kerry and Clark falter early enough, Lieberman will have a legitimate shot at being the second horse in a two horse race. IMHO, the only candidates who have absolutely no shot right now are Sharpton, Moseley-Braun and Kucinich but Kucinich & Sharpton will stick it out for a while so that they can have influence down the road.

Face it, this is not Lieberman country at DU.

It is not Kool to express any positive thoughts about Lieberman here, so anyone who might harbor a kind feeling or two for Joe is not very bloody likely to speak up.

Most threads use his name as bait for another round of Joe-bashing. It seems to keep the spirits up here.

Lieberman is not the favored choice of the left and never will be, but he has appeal for moderates. Moderates don't tend to frequent DU.

55. Firming up our right flank, are we general?
No, I don't like Lieberman. The most horrible of pro-Bush Democrats, pious religiosity, support for Homeland and PATRIOT, extreme pro-war and pro-Israel views.

He has his liberal side on some domestic issues, but so what given his "Vichy" approach to Bush.

One nice thing about him, unlike your candidate, Iranian Democrat, is that Lieberman has no chance of winning the nomination, though he can be a spoiler with his constant ranting at the "leftists" and that he is the only one who can speak to the center. (The latter is your man's favorite trope, is it not?)

Another nice thing about Lieberman is that his positions are heartfelt, long-established, and confirmable in his voting record as long-term politician with actual experience in politics. Unlike certain other candidates I could name who seem to want to airlift themselves into the White House a la Arnie.

A second nice thing about Lieberman, shockingly, and to his credit, is that he has pushed hard for 9/11 investigations. Don't quite know what's going on there - presumably he and McCain looking for leverage on Bush, but this can easily spin out of control.

9/11 truth, when it's done will take down a lot more than just Bush.

(Crossing my fingers...)
