could not vote in presidential elections, up until 1864. It was the military vote that sent Lincoln over McClellan. It does not surprise me in the least, that especially the rank and file, would be against bush. I cannot think of one person in the military that has ever gone AWOL, deserted, or failed in the commission of their duty, that was not basically despised for their inaction. There is no quicker way to lose confidence & respect of those you serve with than to leave your fellow servicemembers to their fate, while you persue a personal agenda; whether that be from fear, greed or any other personal foible.
Everyone who has served in the military knows that the slogans and patriotic rhetoric falls on deaf ears quickly....you fight for yourself, and those around you; nothing else matters in combat.
There are no divisions of religion, race or any of the other commonly divisive ideologies that afflict mankind. We were all 'green' and it was imperative to bring everyone home that we could. I NEVER asked a man or woman what religion they were while in the Army, we were Americans all, and that was the ONLY thing that counted.
Fathers, sons, daughters and mothers......the object was to get home with as much intact as humanly possible. This is the way war is, do your job and get home.
didn't mean to rant, sorry...but I have a soldiers blood running through my veins, and I have nothing but the highest respect for our service men and women, (far and away for the enlisted, there are some great officers, but, sorry, they don't do most of the fighting. It is the Sgt & Pvt that stand on the hill bloodied and winded, they EARNED that respect).
