Walter Washington Dies at 88
Walter Washington, the first elected mayor under D.C. home rule, has died this morning at Howard University Hospital. He was 88.

A spokeswoman for the university says Washington died at about 5:15 this morning.

Washington had been hospitalized in intensive care for more than a week. The cause of his death isn't immediately available.

President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Washington as the District's mayor-commissioner in 1967. Washington became the first African-American to head a major U.S. city.

2. What were his policies and accomplishments?
I knew nothing about him, and I am fairly well-informed.
