Saw Dean on Road to the Whitehouse yesterday ...
I am no Dean supporter. I sure hated that necktie he had on - looked like something out of a kiddie's closet or something.

The man must have a lonesome life being he pretty much coped to the fact that no one in his family is particularly interested in his political yearnings.

Dean said his wife would continue to practice as an M.D. if he gets the nomination and that she isn't really into being a "first lady" so to speak. Not that I blame her. However, fact of the matter is I don't think I've ever seen her or any of the two kids he has.

He strikes me a being more of an outsider than ever really.

:wtf:

1. Good interview
What I liked best is when he said, regarding dealings with foreign leaders in particular, is to never, ever bluff. It helped me believe that his hero really is Truman. Also, when asked what the best advice was his parents ever gave him, he said he didn't know. He answered that question the same way he answered all the rest, quickly and forthrightly. Yeah, he must be an outsider. He says what he thinks.

2. Fun though
I think the guy interviewing him had NO sense of humor. The best was just before they toured HQ. Dean made a half-joke, laughed, and then just coughed. No reaction from the interviewer.

He looked good. He sounded good.

3. The fact that he respects his family's decisions and doesn't haul them
like show dogs around the country during his campaign has earned the respect of enough people to make him the frontrunner.

With Dean's crazy campaign schedule, he doesn't have time to be lonesome. Anyway I read where he calls his wife at least once a week when he's on the road campaigning to reconnect.

I think he has a healthy family life. His daughter is attending Yale and he declined to attend a debate in South Carolina to attend a parent/student conference with his daughter. When his son had to appear before court after his run-in with the law, Dean was there in court with his son.

I think Dean has a good sense of prioritizing his work and family engagements. He's been married for over 20 years. Something must be working in that marriage.

4. So his tie is a problem now?
Keerist, it is probably a tie given to him by some pediatric hospital!!! (sorry this is to original poster not you larkspur)

What the hell is wrong with people???

I agree with his stance on the family. His wife is not a token "strong woman" but a real-life working woman who obviously loves her career. She has spoken out...she was at his official announcement and I got an email from her last quarter.

Larkspur, I agree he seems to have a healthy personal life, unlike so many others.

5. The Tie
My wife and I are HUGE Dean fans, and the first thing we said when we saw him on RTTWH was, "What fer Tie is that?"

Obviously a gift, either from one of the kids or like you said, a pediatric hospital.

Plays to the point. What kind of friggin tie he's wearing isn't important.

8. But wait Hep, you're kind of new huh?
There have been hundreds of threads about his height, neck size, lips, eyes, rolled-up sleeves....blah blah blah.

I think it took balls for him to wear a child's drawing cartoon necktie in his interview with CSPAN. Frankly, it shows where his heart is at. He is still a doctor and obviously someone showed him their appreciation and he wore it instead of a frickin' yellow or blue "power" tie.

He also blew me away when he was asked "What's the best advice your parents ever gave you?" He hesitated about 5 seconds, thinking then said with a smile "I don't know." He did not make up some cutesy, homey, parental antecdote. He was direct. #1 reason I like him. He also has that spark of "wanting it." Kerry and the pack, especially Gephardt sounded and looked so absolutely bored with what they were saying last night, I was a bit shocked.

Wear hiking boots next time Doc!

15. Believe he calls his wife every night
and I thought the big smile he had when recalling their courship was sincere.

He wants to defend his family's privacy--can't fault him for that.
His discussion of his brother, Charlie, was interesting and gave some insight into what influences molded his character. I also saw part of the C-Span coverage of the Dean campaign earlier in the summer and thought that it showed a very likeable, personable side of Dean's character. He genuinely seemed to be in his element and enjoying the process.

I like Dean's direct and intelligent style and I think most people will find his character a likeable one.

19. Oh yeah, the part about his brother was new to me.
How terrible for his family. He is amazingly articulate when speaking about things off the cuff like that. Can you imagine Smirk even pronouncing the word "Laotian?" And the story about his close relationship with the president of Argentina was interesting.

24. LOL
Can you imagine Smirk even pronouncing the word "Laotian?"

To quote from King of the Hill: "What Ocean?"

Charlie Dean went to my alma mater. Big McGovernite in the early 70's. At our meetups, old friends of charlie dean talk about how inspiring he was, and how much like him howard is today.

6. It was an excellent interview.
It was well-done.

I thought his tie was funny, a statement of some sort.

Remember, he does not fit a pattern. That is a good thing.

7. Dean the Outsider
Fine with me, the more outside the centrist, bush-lite, DLC the better. As the Gov says, we must reclaim the soul of the Democratic Party and STOP trying to be Repuke lite.

9. Pretty sure that was a UNICEF tie
looks familiar - used to be "tied" in with Halloween time of year for collections. If so, a very good choice - but it could have been mentioned somehow.

Good interview all around.

I had drifted away from Dean, worried that although he says what I want to hear, he may not be all that well prepared for the Big Time. I was reassured by the depth of his knowledge, but still am leery of his "cut to the chase" style of management. He said he would know when patience is in order - I wonder about that.

10. I think he would be tied in to the needs of the people, most doctors are.
He has an aura around him of not tolerating foolishness and fools well. He does sometimes sound almost too tough. I think, though, in the long run that he would have a lot of heart.

I think he is scared for our country's finances and economy, and I think that makes him sound impatient. I am afraid for us as well, and I think everyone needs to be.

11. Wait. Is your objection to his wife refusing to be slave labor
for a political campaign?

Let me remind you that Hillary Clinton was informed that, not being paid, she was not an employee of the White House and therefore not entitled to counsel or privilege when talking with WH counsel.

After that ruling, NO woman should work on any husband's campaign or do any of the so-called First Lady work. It's slavery.

But I guess you feel slave labor is woman's work.

This woman has a job and she's busy. Since when is it her responsibility to show up for HIS campaign? She ain't running. And if he wins, the White House won't protect her. Democrats found that out the hard way.

12. It wasn't so bad.

I like that his wife won't be pushed around at all.

It was way more troubling when he repeated his view that Bush was a good governor in Texas.

I may be wrong, but my recollection is that Dean said Bush was more moderate as governor.

23. What makes you think
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 03:04 PM by Hep
the average Kerry supporter/Dean Basher here NEEDS to watch something in order to jump to conclusions?

Like I've said before, KNOWING the facts takes people from being WRONG to being liars, and they don't want to be called liars when they're getting away with simply being misinformed and ignorant of the truth.

20. I didn't use quotes, but he said he liked him as governor.
If he said he didn't like him as governor then I'd assume he thought Bush was a bad governor.

22. Interpretation is scary
Go figure, a vocal Dean critic interpreting a vague statement in such a way as to make Dean look bad. Who'd have thunk it?

26. I Watched This Interview ...
... and if I was indecisive regarding the candidates prior to it, I'm not any more.

His honesty, forthrightness and candor are refreshing. He avoids the platitudes that other politicians regurgitate. His positions are in sync with mine. I will vote for this man.

His tie!? Don't be so shallow.
