1. Thanks for the Reminder
Sharpton always does well on Tweety's show. He used to be a guest quite a bit before he started his presidential campaign.

2. I'll choke down Tweety to catch Al.
In the lead-up to tonight's show, MSGOP had Tweet on this afternoon. He was asked what he thought Al's answer would be to Tweet's favorite canned question: what is your favorite movie?

Tweet jumps on it with, "I hope he'll give me a SERIOUS answer. Kerry didn't give me a SERIOUS answer to that question. Edwards did."

What a fuckin idiot! The guy asks a presidential candidate a question below the par of Father Guido Sarducci's famous, "iffa you coulda be any animal, ANY animal, what would it-a be?" and is pissed that Kerry didn't take it seriously? I saw Kerry's reply. At first, he couldn't believe the question, then he said he had no particular fav, then he said something like, " I have a lot of favs...Animal House, Indiana Jones..." So, he DID answer Tweety.

What's Tweet want him to say, "Jimmy Stewart in Mr Smith Goes to Washington"?

Fuckin' asshole.

Mathews will treat him with respect though, because he knows Sharpton would wipe the floor with him otherwise, so it's not too big a loss.

19. But it was a reasonable question, and Al's answer was a solid one
People really don't differentiate between punishing drug users and reducing the use of illegal drugs. Sharpton showed very clearly how we need to distinguish the two in order to make real progress towards social justice.

Not to take away from Al's parry, which was priceless.

Tweety: "Why do you use the word disingenuous?...why not say dishonest?"

Al: "Because I'm talking and you aren't gonna put words in my mouth."

24. Sharpton is a valuable asset
While he stands no real chance of being elected he serves several valuable purposes while remaining a candidate.

1. He adds to the "down with *" publicity.
2. His charisma helps sway non-voters and indie voters toward us
3. Entertains us through debates which are ultimate repuke slam fests
4. Can bring up sensitive issues involving religions and races since he is both a reverend and a black man
5. Adds some good old fashioned tell it like it is - who's your daddy rhetoric

I would love to see this guy in the cabinet

31. Great Point!
Rule #1 in interviewing is let the guest answer the question or don't ask it in the first place.

Tweety is like so many who are more impressed with them showing up the guest than actually asking a serious question and listening to the answer.

You can just see he's on his cards and only looks up when he senses a "gotcha" he can try to trip up Sharpton with.

23. Al adds to every debate
I thought Sharpton was another "holier-than-thou" Jesse Jackson type, but I've really enjoyed all he's done in this campaign. He's there to keep the party bosses reminded that 90% of blacks voted for Gore in 2000 and should have a place in this debate. Al appears to speak well for the issues that matter most to his constituency.

He's made no bones that he doesn't expect to win...just to keep issues important to blacks in the dialogue.

And he's taking it to Tweety...right there I'm impressed again. I'd love every Democrat to shut him down like this and expose him for the Rove shill he is.

25. Awhile back...
someone posted a thread stating certain candidates should just drop out of the race becasue they didn't stand a chance -- Al was one of those candidates mentioned.

As I'm watching him on "Hrdball", I want to say THIS is why I want him -- ALL of them, actually -- to stay in the race as long as possible. Al has a point of view that America needs to hear much more of.

Go Al!

29. Al's got Tweety's ass in a sling
and he's beating the shit out of the freepers and their loaded questions. I love it when these candy-assed college kids try to take Al down. Al has been through so much...like when he mentioned the 3 months he spent in prison for standing on his principles in PR. Those whiners wouldn't last a night in a small-town lock up before phoning Poppy and Pussy to pick them up. Al just doesn't let their shit go unchallenged - and he doesn't giver them the answer they want.

Al is great. He wins the first half hour of the show, 10-0.

Tweety looks like the kid who's losing the high school debate, even though he's controlling it.

42. I actually stopped watching cos I felt bad for Tweety!
The last few minutes where Chris tries so hard to make Al call the RtoL conservatives "bad people" and Sharpton takes him to town... man, it was physically painful to watch Sharpton waltzing all over that clown. Chris' strategy of trying to talk over people and put words in their mouths just doesn't work on Al Sharpton.

Matthews apparently underestimated the Reverend Al. Everyone underestimates Al. It's funny to hear the other candidates dreading having to talk after Al. He's badass.

You make it sound like DK is a front-runner. He's buried and even if he got one good shot off at Tweety and three solid minutes to explain his policies, that would be a lot better than nothing at all.

Sharpton sounds smarter the more he talks and stands up to the whores like Tweety. The guys got the guts never to stand down to anyone...that's something the Democrats better get if they hope to defeat the Rove machine.

Very few Democrats do, and you're quite right, the Democratic candidates could do a lot worse than going to the Al Sharpton Forensics School. Sharpton perserveres where others would get flustered and let Tweety finish their sentences. Sharpton doesn't give a rat's ass if Tweety talks, you can almost feel the contempt he has for small-time media whore acts like Tweety as he just keeps on rollin'.

Sharpton doesn't take shit from anyone.

Sometimes Tweety just seems plain old dense to me. Twice with Sharpton he seemed too stupid to understand the answer -- the first time on Al's answer on how he would pay for a single payer health plan and then on his right to life and children's causes complaint. He did the same thing with Kerry. I can't tell if he pretends to be stupid or if he's just sometimes too dense to understand something that's not black and white.

60. The Mr Deeds comment went right over Tweety's head!
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 10:37 PM by stopbush
If was obvious that CM had no idea Al did a cameo in that movie. Al's answer was funny...he was obviously playing to the Adam Sandler fanatics who know everything about AS's flicks. And if you know the flick, Al is funny in those scenes, sort of poking a bit of fun at himself as Sandler gets off a few rhymes. Tweety was s-o-o-o lame, he tried to show that he was a movie buff by knowing there was an old and a new version of Mr Deeds ("which one, the Jimmy Stewart or the Adam Sandler?"), but it was obvious he hadn't seen the Sandler remake. Al's reply - "the one starring Adam Sandler and Al Sharpton." I think Tweety STILL didn't get it!

BTW - during the cutaways from Al to Tweety, CM looked really pissed off. He usually has that "I'll smile at you now but trash you next week when you're not around to defend yourself" shit going on, but not tonight. He was beaten and he knew it. He may start the Sharpton bashing tomorrow...or dismiss him as "unelectable" and "not serious."

As my 10-year-old says, Sharpton rules and Matthews drools!!

I love Al in the race cuz:

ALL of the other Dem candidates are so damned dull. Al lightens things up and gets the other Dem candidates to loosen up and show a sense of humor.

He doesn't edit himself before he talks; he doesn't run the poll numbers through his head -- doesn't worry about how this comment or that comment is going to affect his candidacy. He just says what he thinks, straight out. He's a straight shooter like Harry Truman.

Not to mention that he actually stands up for the core issues that have made me a lifelong Democrat ... that made me work in McGovern campaign headquarters as a teenager. The stuff that made me idealistic, when I was still idealistic ... the stuff that first lit a fire in my belly.

And he made Chris Matthews look like an idiot. If that guy thinks he's really gonna run for senate from Pennsylvania someday, he can kiss my Pennsylvanian ASS!
