10 key values of the Green Party, In case you forgot.
1. GRASSROOTS DEMOCRACY
Every human being deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives and not be subject to the will of another. Therefore, we will work to increase public participation at every level of government and to ensure that our public representatives are fully accountable to the people who elect them. We will also work to create new types of political organizations which expand the process of participatory democracy by directly including citizens in the decision-making process.

2. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
All persons should have the rights and opportunity to benefit equally from the resources afforded us by society and the environment. We must consciously confront in ourselves, our organizations, and society at large, barriers such as racism and class oppression, sexism and homophobia, ageism and disability, which act to deny fair treatment and equal justice under the law.

3. ECOLOGICAL WISDOM
Human societies must operate with the understanding that we are part of nature, not separate from nature. We must maintain an ecological balance and live within the ecological and resource limits of our communities and our planet. We support a sustainable society which utilizes resources in such a way that future generations will benefit and not suffer from the practices of our generation. To this end we must practice agriculture which replenishes the soil; move to an energy efficient economy; and live in ways that respect the integrity of natural systems.

4. NON-VIOLENCE
It is essential that we develop effective alternatives to society’s current patterns of violence. We will work to demilitarize, and eliminate weapons of mass destruction, without being naive about the intentions of other governments. We recognize the need for self-defense and the defense of others who are in helpless situations. We promote non-violent methods to oppose practices and policies with which we disagree, and will guide our actions toward lasting personal, community and global peace.

5. DECENTRALIZATION
Centralization of wealth and power contributes to social and economic injustice, environmental destruction, and militarization. Therefore, we support a restructuring of social, political and economic institutions away from a system which is controlled by and mostly benefits the powerful few, to a democratic, less bureaucratic system. Decision-making should, as much as possible, remain at the individual and local level, while assuring that civil rights are protected for all citizens.

6. COMMUNITY-BASED ECONOMICS AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE
We recognize it is essential to create a vibrant and sustainable economic system, one that can create jobs and provide a decent standard of living for all people while maintaining a healthy ecological balance. A successful economic system will offer meaningful work with dignity, while paying a “living wage” which reflects the real value of a person’s work.

Local communities must look to economic development that assures protection of the environment and workers’ rights; broad citizen participation in planning; and enhancement of our “quality of life.” We support independently owned and operated companies which are socially responsible, as well as co-operatives and public enterprises that distribute resources and control to more people through democratic participation.

7. FEMINISM AND GENDER EQUITY
We have inherited a social system based on male domination of politics and economics. We call for the replacement of the cultural ethics of domination and control with more cooperative ways of interacting that respect differences of opinion and gender. Human values such as equity between the sexes, interpersonal responsibility, and honesty must be developed with moral conscience. We should remember that the process that determines our decisions and actions is just as important as achieving the outcome we want.

8. RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY
We believe it is important to value cultural, ethnic, racial, sexual, religious and spiritual diversity, and to promote the development of respectful relationships across these lines.

We believe that the many diverse elements of society should be reflected in our organizations and decision-making bodies, and we support the leadership of people who have been traditionally closed out of leadership roles. We acknowledge and encourage respect for other life forms than our own and the preservation of biodiversity.

9. PERSONAL AND GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY
We encourage individuals to act to improve their personal well-being and, at the same time, to enhance ecological balance and social harmony. We seek to join with people and organizations around the world to foster peace, economic justice, and the health of the planet.

10. FUTURE FOCUS AND SUSTAINABILITY
Our actions and policies should be motivated by long-term goals. We seek to protect valuable natural resources, safely disposing of or “unmaking” all waste we create, while developing a sustainable economics that does not depend on continual expansion for survival. We must counterbalance the drive for short-term profits by assuring that economic development, new technologies, and fiscal policies are responsible to future generations who will inherit the results of our actions.

1. Ten Key Values of Mike Higgins (in case you care)
Beat Bush
Beat Bush
Beat Bush
Beat Bush
Beat Bush
Beat Bush
Beat Bush
Beat Bush
Beat Bush
Beat Bush

In 2004 there is no question of choosing the lesser of two evils. We already know a baloney sandwich deserves our votes more than Bush.

5. Yellow dog democrats
I'd vote for a yellow dog before I'd vote for Bush. In fact the yellow dog would likely have more intelligence, compassion, and understanding of political truth than GWB ever will.

2. Personal and Global Responsibility - hmmmm
The greens need to work on that one a bit.

Nader going out there proclaiming there is no difference between republicans and democrats is a pretty friggin irresponsible thing to tout.

I take the blame that so many dems were too stupid to think it through.

But we all got a real good lesson in how absurd that little campaign platform really was, didn't we?

Screw the greens. And I'd say at this point that more greens have moved to the dem side than the other way around after learning all about the difference between the repukes and the dems.

16. tabloid thinking
Focusing on a single piece of campaign rhetoric, instead of the actual topic of the post, as a pretext for your erudite "screw the (G)reens" really helped a lot.

21. The NeoDems remind me of the RWingers...
...in the sense that they make the party about the person. RWingers are always judging the Democratic party using Clinton as a measure...just the way the NeoDems use Nader to judge the Green party.

- This is the shallowest type of politics.

29. At the time...
Nader going out there proclaiming there is no difference between republicans and democrats is a pretty friggin irresponsible thing to tout.

At the time Nader was saying that, there didn't seem to be much difference. I wish that Mr. Gore had not worried so much about his "image" as it seemed to me that he did. He seemed to be most concerned about distancing himself from President Clinton and he forgot to separate President Clinton's personal life from his policies and accomplishments. It seemed to many that the differences between the two candidates in 2000 was more a difference of degree than a difference of direction.

Of course hindsight is 20/20. Who could have imagined that the country would be attacked, and that after that attack the pResident would choose use that horror as a reason to gratuitously invade a nation that had nothing to do with the attack?

Whatever... Nader is not running for President in 2004 (at least not as far as I know!), and Democrats have the opportunity to pull in Green voters behind a candidate that we all can support. Democrats also have the opportunity to look at the "Green Values" list and think about how those values can work into the message that we put out to the nation.

Defeating Bush is important and essential if the nation is to survive, IMO. But that's just the first part of the task. The rest of the task is to actually save the nation from destroying itself. I don't think that's done by going slower in the same direction. I think it's done by turning around.

17. so brief, yet so wrong
You must have been in a coma since before Jan. 2001. Find someone who you'll trust, and have them explain the electoral fraud to you.

Yeah, yeah, slogans are easier, even when demonstrably false.

7. democratic values rear their ugly head....
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 11:17 PM by mike_c
Do any of you bashers believe in anything? "Beat Bush?" That's your message? Beat Bush?

Terwilliger-- I disagree-- something has changed. The dimwit wing of the democratic party has gotten up off the couch and tried to turn its attention toward something other than Monday night football.

Gimme a B! Gimme an E! Gimme an A! Gimme a T! What's that spell?

Beat Bush!
Beat Bush!
Beat Bush!

Key value number 11 should be compulsory education until you get a clue rather than until you're old enough to vote.

on edit: no I'm not cranky tonight-- ignorance always pisses me off.

That is why I'm pissed off right now.

I agree with every one of 1 through 10. Every one of those things makes me feel good.

But there is more at stake than my personal feelings.

10. they're not "personal feelings," they're "values"
Some seem to consider them "optional." I consider them to be at the core of what makes dems and greens better than repigs. When we adopt core values only when they're convenient and expedient, then we lose track of what makes us different from the pukes. Wanna beat Bush for certain? Steal an election.

...Who are strong on all 10 of those principles. Despite the mighty Rove noise machine, I'm encouraged that Democrats and Greens can unite for the big office and get Bush on a bus back to Crawford.

That would be great...true unity on the left...what say?!?

What? Really? "Democrats" would abandon the party and vote for Bush? The DEVIL you say! :eyes:

23. Tell You What...
If the Greens start actually building a party by winning school boards, city council seats, mayoral races, then Congressional races, I'll get interested.

But as long as they field a presidential candidate, much less one who lies (no difference between the candidates indeed! -- I think we just ran that deathly "experiment"), then Greens deserve to go backwards.

15. Those 10 Key Values...
...are why I am a Green and why I will always vote Green where winning is possible in local elections.

The rest of the time, the Democrats have my vote.

"Think globally, act locally."

We cannot afford to let GOP operatives divide us again!

We cannot afford to let Green Party purists divide us again!

Let's take a lesson from the Rethuglicans, who know when to bridge ideologic gaps and forge alliances to achieve common cause.

All of our progressive ideals will come to nothing if Greens and Democrats cannot be united in pursuing our common goals!

19. yeah...but any democrats voting for greens locally?
i demand that all democrats do so, henceforth. seems appropriate to demand local support for green candidates, since folks demand national supportfor democrats. btw...this likely the position of a sizable portion of greens, the debate here notwithstanding.

Demanding that people vote a certain way is the Rethuglican way, not mine.

27. Yes, but why do the Greens have to give what little they have?
MAYBE we could invest in making the Democratic party a better place for Greens, then they wouldn't want another party.

Telling them that they have to do what you say doesn't sound very democratic.
