Dean debating skills limited, seems to repeat the same stuff
over and over without expanding his points.

1. He isn't the best debator
but he is getting better. He would still knock Schrub out of the hall without appearing to be overbearing like many people thought Gore was.

14. Not to my knowledge
particularly if it's done to show how someone says one thing in one thread, and something else in another

21. how?
I responded to the exact same thread you started that was closed becuase of your out and out negativity towards Dean supporters, thahn you edited it and reposted...which is the same thing I did....what I was questioning, as no one here knows, because the dont have the original post in front of them....was that there were already two threads going at the time that was already covering this topic...and you chose to add a third.....perhaps you were afraid that your brillant post would get lost in the already existing thread.....

But this was a small part of my thread, I raised other points directly to you which you still have to answer....sorry if I challanged you.....I leave you alone now so you can continue having fun spinning......

3. For example?
I think Dean's been doing better, in fact. Especially when you consider his performances in the very early debates (e.g. South Carolina).

4. Repeating is good -- gets people to know who you are.
The problem isn't repetition, it's what Dean's saying, in my mind.

I don't like him repeating that he's the only candidate to talk about race to white audiences, or repeating that he's doesn't like a progressive tax code, or repeating the story about the anti-male gender discrimination he set out to remedy not because he repeats those stories, but because of what they say about his policies.

except they do it with lies, after people hear the lies enough they strangly become 'facts'.

6. I'd actually like to see Dean in a real debate.
These things on TV aren't really debates. They're just group interviews. There's no real back-and-forth, no rebuttals unless attacked, and only a minute per point. (Can't really expand a point in 60 seconds.)

That said, no, Dean doesn't do as well in this format as some of the others do (and Dean doesn't do as well in this format as he does in other formats).

7. He is very quick on his feet. But he does talk in soundbites.
Admittedly, he does tend to repeat his soundbites. BUT, he would be very formidable in a debate with Bush who is slooooooooow to come up with the words.

11. They're All Stumping
One minute responses and viewers that haven't heard the message before. Throw in a few jabs for sport, but essentially, all 9 are working to expand their base & shilling for the $$$ to stay in the game.

I'd hold off on the substantive judgements til after Iowa/NH.

Anybody who wants to know more can visit the candidates' websites. These early debates aren't for OUR benefit, really.

12. The only candidates with proven debate skills and talent
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 02:13 PM by Bombtrack
are Edwards and Kerry.

Edwards being one of the most successful lawyers in his regions history. And Kerry in the Weld debates

16. we're political junkies, & most people dont see dean enough to see it
any candidate's mantra will sound repetitious to those observing it closely. most people are not observing it as closely as we are.

dean is doing just fine. debate performance will not lose the nomination unless dean pulls a ford-like "poland is free" boner.

the fight for the nomination is being fought on the ground, in caucases and in the wards all over the country right now.

dean is strong at this level. only gephardt comes close.

why?

these organizations will get out the votes.

but right now he is not competing against the Bush biased media.

19. Because there are 9 candidates, there is only time for soundbites
There is no time to expound upon one's positions in these gatherings.

I definitely think that Dean has improved his debate and TV performances since the beginning of this year. When he is attacked, like when Gephardt attacked Dean on some of his Medicare views 8 years ago, Dean was sharp in his rebuttal.

If the number of candidates lesson to the point that the debators left can respond more than 60 seconds, a length of 2 TV commercials, to a question, then we will see Dean and the others expound more on their positions and then we can discuss Dean's debating skills.

As far as debates, remember, there is no reason for Bush to debate his opponent next year. Rove will find some excuse to not have Bush in a debate, so the Dem nominee better be an aggressive campaigner because it will be the campaigner, not the debator, who wins 2004.

20. I'll give Dean this
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 02:23 PM by aeon flux
Unlike Shrub, every word that comes out of Dean's mouth isn't prefaced with "uhhhh, ummmmm, doh" etc.

Notice how Shrub is constantly muttering "umm, uhh," even when repeating a soundbite?? How did this clown graduate Yale? I'm surprised he graduated high school.

edit: sp.

23. Dean keeps saying he was against the Iraq war, yet he told
Salon.com "if the U.N. in the end chooses not to enforce its own resolutions, then the U.S. should give Saddam 30 to 60 days to disarm, and if he doesn't, unilateral action is a regrettable, but unavoidable".

Bush was listening and thought he heard 3-6 days.

Otherwise Bush followed to Dean's plan.

24. Dean pussied out from a one on one Kerry debate
those are just the facts.

Of course his reasoning was that it would be unfair to the other candidates, but that's clearly BS. If he thought he could hold his own this early on against Kerry he would agree.

27. well.....
Kerry IS not the front-runner.......agreeing to a debate with Kerry gives Kerry the status of a front-runner when in reality, Kerry's not.

Plus, in the press, it's important for each candidate to ignore the existence of other candidates to stress their issues. That's why you don't hear Dean going, "Kerry this, Kerry that" when he talks.

Kerry keeps talking about Dean all the time, without being prompted by a question to do so.

I have as much experience that Bush did when he took office....was about as reassuring....as we fight how many wars?

as a cotton blanket without a sleeping bag camping in Yosemite in February!
