We will make short work of Saddam, then you and I will take a vacation somewhere wonderful where I will hold you close with my hands properly positioned. Everything is falling in line and happening for a reason, just like you always said it would. This is my great challenge and I'm facing it happily because it is making me feel cleansed somehow. I will emerge on the other side ready to take you in my arms and begin living life the way it should be lived. I was worried and scared before, but now I feel nothing but confidence and strength coming from the support you are giving me. ..... For a joke, Staff Sgt. Lincoln Hollinsaid's mother wrote a letter to her son's commanding officer: "Please excuse Linc from the army as his mom needs him home. Signed, Mom." Hollinsaid, 27, replied to her, "Cute note. I will be sure to show that to top (first sergeant). I will be on the first plane back. Yeah right."

Soon after he wrote that, his vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

After he died, one last letter arrived.

"Ma," he wrote. "When I come back home, we will have to have another campfire in the garden, but twice as big, with pizza, lots of greasy pizza. Oh lord, I can smell it now."
