Gephardt Faults Dean About Medicare

DES MOINES, Oct. 28 — Representative Richard A. Gephardt, Democrat of Missouri, used a speech on Medicare on Tuesday to mount one of his sharpest attacks on Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont, saying there was "very little difference" between Dr. Dean and President Bush on Medicare spending.

"The fact is we need a Democratic nominee who is clearly different from George Bush," Mr. Gephardt told a group of the elderly here. "But on all these Medicare issues, there is very little difference between George Bush and Howard Dean. They both support cutting Medicare. They support turning it into managed care. They think recipients should pay more for services.

"This is preposterous," the campaign manager, Joe Trippi, said in a statement as he changed the subject to Iraq. "While Governor Dean was standing up to President Bush's pre-emptive war in Iraq, Dick Gephardt was standing with him and supporting him every step of the way."

One of the funniest cartoon-ballooned photos during the run up to the war that I saw was of Bush, Lott, Daschle and Gephardt in the Oval office having a nice little meeting. The Bush caption said "Hey guys, I have a great idea! Lets start a war in Iraq!" Cheney chimes in with "Big time!", Daschle says "can we go to lunch first?" and Gephardt is just grinning at the ceiling, saying "Whatever".

Priceless.

And look how accurate it was, all this time later. Life imitating art.
