Edwards discusses strengthening middle class

"Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a Council Bluffs audience Monday he values hard-working American families.

Does President Bush?

"He values money and wealth," Edwards said. "He wants to make sure those who have money and wealth keep it and that they're in a protected club. I want to see more opportunities for more people."

The U.S. senator from North Carolina, speaking to a large gathering at the home of Pam Wilson at 311 Woodbury Ave., said Bush's tax policies favor the wealthiest, when it should be for the middle class.

"We ought to make the president explain to people why a millionaire relaxing by the pool is paying a lower tax rate than a firefighter or teacher," Edwards said. "What makes the economy work is the middle class. His proposals make it more difficult for the economy to grow and create jobs. We ought to be helping the middle class. We need to create wealth for those who don't have wealth.""
