Home abortions soar in Iraq as unwanted pregnancies rise

Women in Baghdad are turning to backstreet abortionists to avoid the risk of family honour killings, reports Damien McElroy

In a makeshift clinic behind locked doors, a nervous young woman sits on the edge of a bed preparing herself for an operation that will rid her of one unintended consequence of Baghdad's new atmosphere of freedom.

The austere room belongs to Samira Ali Baddria, a midwife turned backstreet abortionist, one of dozens of medically trained people who now offer an illegal escape from pregnancy to the city's women. The nervous young woman is her latest "patient".

In Iraq, a Muslim country, abortion has long been illegal - and socially taboo - except in medical emergencies. But since the collapse of Saddam Hussein's rule turned the established order on its head, Baghdad has witnessed an upsurge in promiscuity - and the emergence of a practice too risky to carry out under the former regime, with its network of spies. Abortion has become readily available.

1. Oh no
This doesn't look good.

And to think that the pro-lifers in the US are going to intervene just like how they do with everything else.

2. Funny you should mention that.
I can't get the actual link to work, but look at this.

Pro-Life Groups Call for Pres Bush to Make Public Commitment-No US funds to promote abortion in iraq

Pro-life/Pro-family groups call for President Bush to make public commitment that no funds from United States be used to promote abortion or conception in rebuilding of Iraq.

Organizations to discuss concerns at a news conference which will be held Thursday, October 30, at 11 a.m., in front of the White House on Lafayette Park sidewalk.

Groups will also make available a letter that has been sent to the White House asking Bush to support the dignity of life, religious traditions and human rights in Iraq.

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, states; "It would be tragic to have liberated the people of Iraq from the tyranny and violence of Saddam only to introduce them to the violence of abortion."

3. Just another delightful result of the US invasion
And, as always, it's the poor women of this world who suffer the most.
