Is your hometown paper full of vilification of Democrats / liberals?
Practically every other day, something like this pops up in the "Opinion Line."

Quote from today, Wichita (KS) Eagle, 29 October

"The Democrats are more than willing to compromise our national-security interests if it serves the purpose of empowering them. The Democrats are playing a deceitful, dangerous game bordering on treason."

They invariably call Democrats / liberals "enemies,""traitors," or as this idiot did "treasonous." I'm starting to wonder if this is just a few Annthrax fans or if there's a campaign--like the faked soldiers' letters--out there to vilify Bush critics.

4. West-central Ohio here
The local fishwrapper here is a total repug rag, a worthless read with three-day old news on the front page. The local repug idiots write in complaining about that "liberal media". It might do for toilet paper, if you had no other, but is totally worthless for news.

8. The Cleveland Plain Dealer may be fairly liberal,
but the News-Herald, in Lake (my county) and Geauga counties, 20 miles away from Cleveland, sure as hell isn't. The way the letters and editorials carry on, you'd think the "libruls" were in control of everything and that they'd brought Stalin and Marx back to life and were planning to unleash them on the country. I can barely read it anymore.

2. Fight back, co-opt their language
You and I know their rhtetoric is meaningless, but there is a way you can sap any meaning for all readers. Simply start using their terminology.

"Lying to the American people about the reasons for war is treasonous."

"Bush has proven himself an enemy of our children by racking up the largest ever defict."

in our paper. I just love Virginia.

I am in Northeast NE, and while there are occasionally shots taken at the "liberals", I and a few other Progressives have tackled them immediately. I e-mail, the local paper, and have been published all but once, in the few years I've done this.

I remain respectful of the others views, but I ask 'tough' questions. (i.e., tell me WHY you hate Hillary?; Where is the money YOU got back from the tax cuts?; Are you better off now, than when bush took over the reins?). I am met by silence EVERY time.

I am also lucky, in that the Rep for this district, Doug Bereuter, shows up in "Town Meetings". This makes for wonderful opportunities to take the message to the people here. I am always the LAST on to ask him questions, and I am proud of the fact that I am the only person who was ever escorted out of a "Town Meeting"! (I asked why the gov't, meaning him and the others in Congress, were so blatant about stealing the 'excess Social Security funds', and then crying the system was breaking down).

I always ask for feedback, and the few times I do hear something in return, it is the usual garbage about Clinton, communism or some other red herring.

As an aside: I have gotten 8 people to change their voter's registration from GOP to Independent, and 2 to Dem. It is difficult, but the more I help other to think for themselves, the better it gets.
I never go out of my way to be beligerant, but I will fight back if attacked on an intellectual level. That is rare however, the 'Ramrod Right' doesn't have the spine for a fight.

7. Opinion lines draw real nutcases.
It takes more brains to write letters to the editor. The real test is in the letters and, of course, the paper's editorials.

9. Oddly enough...
Our locals Repuke rags are fairly balanced, vis a vis, LTE's. I think they consciously try for 'balance'--- something Faux News could emulate, among others.

10. Small suburban weekly
West Valley View, www.westvalleyview.com, outside Phoenix.

Usually pretty conservative, but they can occasionally get a bit more to the left of center.

Two excellent lefty cartoons this week, and a few lefty LTTEs, too.

11. All too often, unfortunately!
While the three papers I read are relatively balanced in the letters that they publish, there do seem to be more than a few people out there who are bound and determined to demonize anyone who does not agree with their rigid, moralistic views.
The ones that make me the most sad are those who claim to have exclusive knowledge of the Will of God and imply that all those who disagree will fry in hell.
What a heinous message for supposed "Christians" to be sending...

13. The Rapid City Journal....published by Lee Enterprises
Is borderline fascist. I speak not only of opinion pieces and letters to the editor...but the overall flavor of the news they choose to make available to subscribers.

14. Constantly
A right-wing piece of shit rag. There was an "Editorial" a few weeks back that just tore into Hillary because she was educated and made fun of her accomplishments. Then they went on to knock the liberals in Hollywood who make fun of the pres. Made me want to puke. They run material sent to them by the Heritage Foundation all the tiime and pretend it's an Op-Ed piece that the paper wrote.
