Just got an idea for an attack ad to air against Bush
But I think it would work best in California because of the nature of the ad. Maybe I'll submit it to MoveOn for their ad contest.

Camera is zoomed in on Bush relaxing at his ranch in Texas with the caption October 29th, 2003 while you hear the sound of flames in the background, quietly at first but growing louder and louder as time passes.

Cut to footage of a house burning down that was taken today, October 29th 2003 with the caption on the bottom of the screen saying Southern California with the date and the number of homes destroyed, acres burned, and lives lost to the fire being said by a voice over.

A voice comes in.

"At least Nero fiddled while Rome burned."

Screen fades to black, but the sounds of the flames continue.

Voice comes back on, saying, "Should this man be our president?"

What do you think?

1. California fire will not be campaign issue in '04.
It's a local issue and an environmental issue. Not a presidential campaign issue.

3. I'm thinking of only having it aired in Southern California
That and we can use it to show how much he ACTUALLY cares about people.

2. ad
I like it. Have him sitting in an easy chair reading a child's picture book while Rome burns.

6. Ooh!
Do something like that for the WHOLE country! I just got another nasty idea actually!

First do the ad I suggested, but leave out the last bit about should this man be our president thing and then just cut to the footage of him in the classroom while the Twin Towers were crumbling then show the Twin Towers collapsing. While the towers fall have a man say again, "At least Nero fiddled while Rome burned"

Fade to black, and then have the voice say, should this man be our president?

8. Cool!
Now do we have anyone who knows how to splice footage together and put in the voice overs I have in mind as well as the proper footage?

I am splice-challenged but you could do the voiceovers.

11. ok
I'll just set up a mike for my computer tehn we can send it in to MoveOn. And regardless if Bush has nothing to do with the situation taht is at hand, the fact that he did NOTHING on BOTH cases is the point I want to make.

Go for broke. Nothing to lose and possibly a great deal to gain. Just thinking about your idea has pepped me up. It always feels good just to be part of something one feels right about. Keep us posted.

14. Good idea
I'm going to see if I can find some software that I can use for splicing video clips and for editing them. ANyone have any favorites that they would recommend?

Also, some links to the footage of Bush on 9/11 would be nice, as I forget where those are at the moment. I'm pretty sure I could find some of Bush lazing next to a swimming pool or something like that and of the Twin Towers collapsing as well as fire footage.

9. Neither of these ads work for me
The fires in CA are unrelated to the fact that Bush was in Texas today, and Bush's responsiblity for 9/11 is unrelated to the fact that he was reading to the kids when it happened. Perhaps these events are symbolic of his mis-administration, but otherwise the connection isn't there and I don't think the ads will work. Sorry.

12. bush is Definetly Guilty of doing nothing to
prevent 9/11 and I'm not sure of what he's done to help the California Fires. And I think by 2004 as November gets nearer that this will be more obvious to More People.

15. i'm afraid very few will get the nero reference
it's a good idea but needs to be brought down to a more recognizable figure. remember this should relate to everyone.. what average person knows who nero is? hell, what average person knows where rome is??

16. True
But it is a common idiom to "fiddle while Rome burns" People may not know exactly who Nero was, but the expression is one that most people understand.

17. What could he have done
in regardes to the California fire? Honestly?

Massive fires raged every year while Clinton was President, including one started by the government in a controled burn gone wrong. Outside of wacko right wingers, no one blamed Clinton for the fires are accused him of doing nothing.

Outside of making federal resources available, which if memory is right, require a request from the governor of the state in need, Bush can't really do jack squat on this matter.

18. It Could Backfire
if you will pardon the pun.

Here's how:
ReTHUGnicans could spin it that the environmental laws supported and passed by Democrats are responsible for the wildfires, because Bush and his cronies wanted to allow for "thinning" of forests, etc by lumber companies.

Now this is pure bullshit, but the RW talk-show pundits are already using exactly this spin to blame the wildfires on Democrats...hell, Rush's fill-in did exactly that today...

I like the idea, but it has a real potential to backfire.

If one were to do just the WTC burning...now THAT just might be a winner.

My opinion, for whatever it's worth.

19. To make it
more universal... simply have some relaxing song playing in the background as you show clips of Bush fishing and golfing and relaxing and sitting crawford and hanging out...

and at the end it says "More vacation days than any other president in history"
