Canadians want closer U.S. ties.... (?)
Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 09:42 PM by HEyHEY
Yeah ummm...44 per cent means less than the majority...nice try post..it don't if the points jumped 18..ANyway..what do Canadians think of this? Americans natch are inivted as well.

OTTAWA - Support among Canadians for closer ties to the United States is at its highest point in three years, a trend experts say reflects growing anxiety about a rift between the countries that has grown to include military, political and trade disputes.

A public opinion poll conducted by the Environics and CROP polling houses for the Centre for Research and Information on Canada found 44% of Canadians surveyed believe Canada should have stronger ties to the United States -- an increase of 18 points since the start of the war in Iraq in March.

That level of support is the highest the group has found in three years of asking the question.

The telephone poll of 3,204 Canadians found 39% of respondents want to keep relations with the United States at the same level, while only 15% would prefer to see a more distant relationship.

5. Hard to say
Most research I've heard so far says the opposite. But this is a poll, who knows where they conducted it. Wish I knew more about what groups they chose.

11. I did a quick check and the two survey companies do different types...
of polling. Environics which often does the social, policy questions and CROP which seems to be more a corporate, business polling company.

13. They do "studies" around their policy bent rather than any polling...
but I have no doubt they have hired polling companies to survey certain policy issues.

This is how they define themselves:

As an independent public policy organization, The Fraser Institute focuses on the role competitive markets play in providing for the economic and social well-being of all Canadians.

15. I know someone who works for the Georgia straight
The share the same building as the Fraser institute. They always get into arguments in the elevator and lobby. Hence the editorials that refer to the Fraser institute as "the dink tank" hehe!

8. yeah exactly
No looks like in crazy post world math is upside down and less means more. I know the thing said the points went up but still it was a bad headline choice.

6. I'm disappointed...
I want a military that represents Canadian values.

I want an end to the War on Drugs.

I want an economy that can survive no matter how things are going between our 2 countries.

I take solace in the fact that we will never be annexed by the GOP...I don't think they want to give the Democrats 75 more places in the Electoral College. (Every province except Alberta...)

9. It is an interesting poll...
It seems to have combined questions related to trade between Canada and the US (I think this is where the stronger ties % comes in) and social relationship where there still is a wish for some distance in policy. I base that on these paragraphs, among others:

The survey also showed the desire to co-operate with the U.S. does not extend to sending Canadian troops into Iraq. While 81% said they would support sending troops based on a request from the United Nations, only 41% would support sending troops based on a request by Washington alone.

Andrew Parkin, co-director of the Centre for Research and Information on Canada, a non-partisan think-tank, said the poll shows Canadians generally want to

improve co-operation between Canada and the U.S. but tend to reject policies they feel are imposed by Washington.
