Help! Help! HELP!!! Need DUer w/ access to WSJ
Edited on Thu Oct-30-03 02:02 AM by davsand
Tomorrow's edition of the Wall Street Journal has a front page article on hospital billing and collection practices along with an article about the work I did last year on a board that tried to block hospital property tax exemptions based on their lack of charity care. This is front page.

I am dying to see that story before tomorrow when it hits the stands here in Illinois. (It has been in the works since just before I left office at the ned of May!)

It is up on the online edition right now but I do not have a subscription... Do any of the DUers have an online subscription to the WSJ that I can get a link to the story? Please?

1. You should change your title to include Wall Street Journal
or make it read something like Help! Need DUer w/ access to WSJ

Good luck

3. Good idea!
I did edit to add that. I am on pins and needles here. I am so excited to think that maybe this might change a system that is broken... That was the only thing I asked the reporter to do--tell the story and shine some light on an awful situation.

Now that it is so close to happening I can barely stand it.

2. you might try freerepublic.com
I know some people over there have subscriptions and post full stories even when copyrighted.

Of course, you will have to sell your soul to the devil to register there.

4. As much as I want that link, I just can't register at Freepland.
Call me stupid, but I just can't do it... The thought of it makes my flesh creep.

7. WSJ online
offers a 2 week free trial. You do have to give them your credit card # but as long as you cancel before the free trial is up, they won't charge your card.

8. Thank you SO much!!!
Bless you for sharing this! I can't tell you how much it means!

I am so happy! Those articles did exactly what I had hoped they would--they explain something that is awful about our health care system and they point out that it isn't just people without insurance who end up financially raped by illness or accidents.

I have waited so long to see this and I am near tears. I only hope it helps.

Live Sicker, Die Younger
By Julie Winokur, San Francisco Chronicle
May 15, 2003

A year and a half ago, Sheila and Bob Wessenberg lived in a 2200-square-foot luxury townhouse outside Dallas, on an income of over $100,000. Today, they are facing bankruptcy and a terminal illness without healthcare. "I might die as a result of my poverty," says Sheila in disbelief. She has gone seven months without chemotherapy or follow-up exams because she has no insurance and no money to pay for healthcare. In a country that prides itself on medical excellence, we also have one of the most dysfunctional healthcare delivery systems in the world. While politicians tiptoe around the problem, thousands of Americans live sicker and die younger because they don't have access to even basic care.

The Wessenbergs and their two children are among an estimated six million people who lost their insurance last year as a result of the economic downturn. They are also living proof that the slide from middle class comfort to absolute desperation can happen at warp speed, especially when health issues are involved.
