Fred Phelps is Awesome

He is doing more for the cause of the seperation of church and state than any liberal appeal to logic and ideals ever could. He vividly demonstrates why Government cannot sanction religous opinions and highlights the reasons why a monument to the ten commandments on government property is not innocuous.

Are we all sure he is not a good guy in disguise calling attention to the absurdities of conservative thought by taking it to its logical conclusion? Maybe Phelps is a post-post-modern performance-art genius playing a huge practical joke and moving the entire country to the left on gay-rights and religion-in-government issues.

If nothing else Phelps is playing the same role as the KKK asswipes in Burmingham who bombed churches and made mainstream Americans embrace the civil rights struggle. And he is doing it all without killing anyone.

Fucking brilliant.

2. you gotta admit, his "monument" plans are exactly what you say

he's claiming that if the 10 commandments are allowed in a public park, so is his bullshit monument. In a way he has a point, and it is EXACTLY why separation works best for us ALL...

They interviewed his wife on radio and she is just as freaked out as he is.

IMO, it's awfully close to child abuse for them to drag their children around the country to hold hateful signs damning gays, etc. Those folks are as fucked in the head as anyone can possibly get.

Falwell doesn't want, in any way, to be lumped with Fred Phelps. Falwell has (mildly) disapproved of Phelps and his tactics.

he should get more exposure. People like this help our cause far more than they know. I wish he could get major nightly news coverage on a weekly basis. Him and Pat and Jerry are one of the finest circular firing squads ever conceived.

10. Fred Phelps is NOT an undercover good guy.

I have known him and his awful family my whole life and I can tell you honestly they believe this. They do NOT miss a day, it can be -30 with blowing sleet and they are out there, children too. I can tell you he has done a lot to soften this pretty conservative town. I called a friend of mine one day when I noticed his business was being picketed and he told me it was HUGE for his business. People stop in just to tell him they are sorry and end up buying stuff. So, perhaps we are living with this for a good reason although I have wanted to bat him over the head on many occasions.

When the entire statue episode began to raise its ugly head, I said to my companion, this is beautiful. Phelps has completely hijacked the anti-gay leadership from the usual suspects (Roberstons, Dobson, Bauer, etc.) and truly presents the face of hate without the window dressing.

I'm glad to you see it the same way, but this is not a popular view.

Phred will always attract a few nutballs no matter what his motivation is and some of them will employ violence. That's bad. And of course as you point out, he will engender a fair amount of revulsion among sane people. That's good. I am not at all sure where the balance point is, though.
