3. They don't much care about job creation
They's settle for 10% unemloyment, which we had in 1982, if the well-to-do could make ever more money. That's what makes Democrats and Republicans different. We want to create jobs and put people to work with the kind of jobs you can raise a family on. They only care about economic growth and low inflation, and job creation is simply an afterthought. Their bottom line is corporate profits and increased income for the wealthy. In fact, they probably like unemployment to be a little high, that way workers have to compete for scarce jobs, creating a race to the bottom of lower wages, fewer benefits and more corporate profits.

Unemployment: It depends on how you define it
By DIANE STAFFORD
Columnist
May. 29, 2003

You've been out of work for 18 months and know 15 others who are vainly job hunting. You suspect that the 5.8 percent unemployment figure for April is government propaganda.

In your world, things are much worse off. And, guess what, in your world, you're right.

The "real" unemployment rate for you is 9.8 percent. You can look it up. It's every bit as real as the 5.8 percent that was reported in the media. So what's the deal?

The deal is that there are six government-sanctioned definitions of unemployment. The six measures produce a broad range of unemployment numbers. For April 2003, the range was a scant 2.5 percent to a scary 9.8 percent.

Snip ......

8. It's bad for the United States, Steve.
3% is a safe number for unemployment in America, 2% is better. 6.1% is bad, Mr. Moore. We're still losing jobs.

And forget about the jobless in this country that aren't figured into the unemployment rate. The ones who's unemployment insurance has dried up. Or the jobs that have left the country and are not coming back regardless of any recovery.

Stop lying.

We are living in Orwell's 1984, at least from the Doublespeak and Doublethink aspects.

Our grandchildren will likely live to see the other shoe drop. Hell, the whole goddamned shoe store, poor bastards.

10. Actually 6.1% wasn't bad, in the olden days.
Back when welfare was available, and unemployment benefits were more generous. We had unemployment much higher than that back during Reagan. However, now that the safety net has shrunk, unemployment needs to be closer to 3%.

However, 3% unemployment is bad for employers, because wages rise, and rich folks don't like paying people good wages.

16. "rich folks don't like paying people good wages."
I always find it amusing that republicans whack off while fantasizing about the benefits of unregulatesd competition, but hate the thought of employers having to compete for employees.

11. Club for Growth is a Bushevik Propaganda Organization
Another Bushevik front group.

And, as with most Busheviks, he is a liar. I guarantee this fuck lives in a McMansion with a $300,000/yr income.

In his mind, that's Middle Class, or perhaps he's just a shameless liar.

You can't tell your Brownshirts without a scorecard.

12. A recession is when someone you know is out of work.
A depression is when you are out of work.

6.1% Unemployment isn't bad if no one you know is out of work.

13. if it was an accurate figure, then yeah
but when you account for those who have given up looking for work or have been forced to take jobs they are way overqualified for receiving much less pay then it is a problem.

6% or 10% so what?? Means either 94% or 90% are still working so those out of a job need to "re-invent" themselves.

That was a couple of days ago,he's now on the "blame the California fires" on any and all Democrats kick. Today its all the fault of Gray Davis. Man,this guy almost makes Pigboy seem human.

19. Moore is a Tax Cut Monkey and the labor underutilization rate is 9.8%
Tax Cut Monkeys fling feces at everything and gleefully assist in the rape of their children and grandchildren provided they are told that they are getting a tax cut. Grover Norquist is the Alpha Tax Cut Monkey but Stephen Moore is a close second. A significant part of the republican base are Tax Cut Monkeys.

The labor underutilization rate for September was 9.8%. This does not include those who are "underemployed." It does include "marginally attached workers," which includes "discouraged workers," and part time employees who want full time work.

20. He should say that...
Edited on Thu Oct-30-03 07:12 PM by foreigncorrespondent
...to the 6.1% who are unemployed and unable to secure any form of employment so they can eat, and feed their families.

On edit: He should also say that to my partner (Sapphocrat) who is kicking herself at the minute for being unemployed and unable to land another job since December of 2000. Why is she kicking herself? Because I am 8,000 miles away from her, and am facing having to live in a Shelter at the begining of next year, because I am unable to find employment as well, and she is unable to do anything to stop it from happening. And it makes her worse knowing that if I was able to be with her, I would have a at least a secure home to live in.
