Dingell seeks accurate portrayal of Reagan in miniseries

DETROIT (AP) -- Democratic U.S. Rep. John Dingell is joining conservatives in protesting an upcoming television miniseries about the life of Ronald Reagan.

Dingell, a Michigan Democrat who is also the longest-serving member in the House, said he hopes the series will provide an accurate portrayal that includes "some of my recollections of the Reagan years," reported The Detroit News.

In a letter to CBS President Leslie Moonves, Dingell said he remembers the $640 Pentagon toilet seats, the Iran-Contra affair, the lying to Congress, the financing of an illegal war in Nicaragua, a cozy relationship with Iraq's Saddam Hussein, trade deficits and astrologers in the White House.

1. Now is not the time to trash Ronald Reagan

As much as we may disagree with many of his policies, Reagan is dying of Alzheimer's disease. It is very unseemly to broadcast a critical movie for the sake of ratings points.

I disliked his policies, but I admired many of his qualities. Let the man die in peace, and leave his legacy to the historians.

However...

1) President Reagan, in his current condition, would not be aware of the film.

2) He will be untouchable after death upon true "sainthood".

his current state is irrelevant.

The right is trying to totally whitewash his record, and is using sympathy about his current illness as a way to create nothing short of a cult of personality around him.

We cannot let this stand. Reagan was one of the most destructive presidents ever, in terms of domestic policy as well as foreign policy.

His very close relationship with and support for Saddam Hussein is only one example of policies that were criminal.

Americans need to know the truth about Reagan.

who are we to? In all of the frothing complaints from the repukes, including their harrassment tactics and threats of boycotts, I have not seen ONE SINGLE quote from Reagan himself.

If he does not have any objections, why should anyone else?

10. Yes, it is. It always is.

While we are being polite they are naming airports and aircraft carriers after a man that makes Bush like intelligent, honest, and altruistic. Reagan was a bad, bad man, and a worse president. He made racism chic again. At a time when the south was coming to grips with its past and trying to move on, he stepped in and told them not to move on. He kicked off his campaign in the town of Philadelphia, Mississippi-- whose only claim to fame then was the murder of three civil rights activists. Reagan told the south to do what it had always done, to hate and segregate. He revived a climate of racial intolerance, and created whole new avenues of racism. He linked social spending to racial intolerance, degrading race relations and social spending.

His terrorist funding in Central and SOuth America lead to tens and perhaps hundreds of thousands of deaths, and when he was ordered by law to stop, he continued to fund an organization in Honduras that was responsible for the murders and rapes of American nuns and priests. He invaded the tourist island of Grenada to further his little idea that a common enemy brings us closer together (killed a hundred people in his little PR stunt). He encouraged Saddam Hussein to invade Iran, he supplied weapons and training to Hussein so he could gas the Kurds, and all the while he was secretely supplying Iran (who had declared war on us) with weapons to fight Iraq-- thus ensuring that the war would not die a natural death, but would result in millions more deaths on both sides. He propped up the DOA Soviet Union, again so he could provide us with a common enemy, making sure the Soviet Union expended every last ounce of energy and resources in a stupid arms race rather than letting them evolve into a more tolerant economic and political system.

The atrocities he committed are still haunting us, and his destructive policies dragged wages down and held production to ridiculous lows.

Now and every time is the time to criticize Reagan, because they are turning hm into a saint who will be emulated if we don't stand up and reveal the truth about that monster. I'll criticize him while his eulogy is being read, and will personally mark the day he dies as a day of triumph for this nation. I doubt the CBS special will be nearly critical enough of that beast.

That's my objective opinion, anyway. Don't get me angry about him. Bush is a boyscout next to Reagan.

6. Why is everyone so concerned about accuracy

Was JFK "accurate?" What about "Nixon?" No, these were just movies and so is this. Some scenes are MEANT to be sensationalized. I heard one freeper moran saying, "if CBS can't prove every single word in the film was actually spoken, they should be sued!" That's just stupid. Fuck the freepers, fuck Reagan, fuck all republicans. As a matter of fact, since it's Friday, fuck EVERYONE who has EVER disagreed with me. :evilgrin: Yup, it's gonna be one of those days. I feel sorry for my co-workers.
