Does anyone out there support Gephardt?
Edited on Fri Oct-31-03 02:44 PM by number six
Not a flame, I've nothing against Gep, just I very rarely see people out there for him. Just a personal interest thing.

1. I support Gephardt
because he is a Democrat. I would vote for him if he got the Demo nod for President. However, my main man is Edwards.

2. Yeah. I get the feeling he's a few people's 2nd or 3rd choice
Edited on Fri Oct-31-03 02:48 PM by number six
but not their main man.

3. Undecided, but
but I've always liked Gep. I think sometimes (as now) he tries too hard to be everything to everyone, but I think that Gep has generally voted his conscience and tried to stand up for what he thought was right. I certainly haven't always agreed, but I do respect him for that.

I have Kerry as my first choice, then Gephardt.

5. Apparently about 26% of Iowa Democrats do.
...according to the latest polls.

Gep has been a good Democrat for many years, and I could live with him being nominated. However, I don't suspect that will happen. For whatever reason, he just doesn't seem to be lighting a fire under many people.

6. A major problem I have is...
that as the head of the Democratics in the Congress, he is in large part responsible for the Democratic "message". The handling of the '02 congressional election under his watch (yes, I know there's DCCC, but he still takes a large part of the blame), gives me pause about his ability to craft a message to take to the national electorate next year.

7. Yes
I think that Gep is a good legislator, but not a good campaigner.

I'll support whoever we nominate, but Gephardt is my first choice. It seems though as all or most of his support comes from either seniors or union members. But a few in the younger crowd like the guy. He's not the flashiest candidate, but he has proven to be an effective Bush-basher---"a miserable failure" and history is proving that he was right on trade all along.

He did a good job of battling Gingrich and Delay also. He's been a good Democrat over the wars, also. Fighting to protect Social Security, Medicare. He'd be a tough opponent for Bush

14. That's Gep's problem
Lots of people think he's good, and hardly anyone would be too disappointed with him as the candidate, but no one is excited for him. Like I said before, great legislator but just not a campaigner. It makes me like him more, but at the same time, we need someone that can beat Bush. I'm not sure that Gep can.

18. Absolutely
I can't imagine too many people saying that he is not qualified to be President. And he's a solid Democrat. And would probably be a very good President. But I sometimes just cringe when he says things like Born in the USA being his favorite song.

8. He's tied for 3rd in my book. He's our "insurance policy"
In case Clark, Dean, or Kerry have a skeleton come out of their closet. I'm think we're pretty safe with old Gep not having much there...

24. He's my insurance policy. Probably second or tied...
with Kerry for second. My only reservation with Kerry is the northern liberal tag. I think he may be able to overcome that though. He's been doing very well in the debates.

16. Not after the backstabbing act he pulled in the Rose Garden
When some of the other Democrats (i.e. Kerry, Edwards, etc.) were trying to cobble together a compromise on the IWR, it was Gephardt, Lieberman, Bayh, etc. that stood behind Bush in a Rose Garden ceremony to announce their support for HIS resolution.

Nevermind the fact that Gep was f***ing HOUSE MINORITY LEADER at the time, and never even ran this by the Democratic Caucus. :argh:

At that very instant, everything that Gephardt had ever done to support workers, labor issues, etc. -- was forever tarnished. He sunk a knife into the backs of countless other Democrats on that day, and history should only judge him unkindly for doing so.

17. Gep Could Be Sleeper
My support has been directed toward Dean and Clark, but I think Gebhardt could be the sleeper. He has real fire in his belly, conveys a visceral dislike of Bush, is very smart and articulate, and I think has a Middle Western likeability. I think he could beat the Shrub. But I do not respect his views on Iraq, before and after.

19. I'm down with Dick Gephardt.
When I've heard him speak, I've almost always been very impressed. As much as most DUers may hate him, when he gets going, he gets a real fire in his belly.

I'm pledged to Kucinich first and foremost, but I'd vote for Dick without many qualms (besides IWR, ugh). He knows the game, and he's a decent human being.

21. I support him
I think he's the one that's most able to make the economic case against Bush, which is what will beat him.

He has a powerful message about the economy, he says "we know how to do this, we did it before."

23. Of course, we are supposed to be Democrats here.
If he gets the nomination he will get my vote. He is a loyal Democrat, just makes some lousy choices occasionally just like we all do.
