i was listening to a replay of democracy now! this evening and apparently the troops died from gun shot wounds but were not dragged from their vehicles, did not have their throats slit and were not pummeled with bricks.

the pentagon has not said how that story got spread through the media.

The people of Iraq hate Americans and rightfully so. I tend to believe the original reports.

4. The Pentagon version smelt of PR

I figured it was the other way around - the bodies were mutilated, and the Pentagon didn't want it to get in the way of the "good vibes" the White House is trying to put out there.

5. The Media Bait-and-Switch

In some dry legal sense, the Pentagon and administration have found the PERFECT excuse for anything and everything under the sun that they get called on: Don't blame us, blame the media. Jessica Lynch got hyped? It wasn't us, it was the media. War got hyped? That darned media's fault again. Troop deaths dramatized? Yep, you guessed it, the media's fault.

A great lesson in the cynical exercise of plausible deniability. They ran with it, it's not our fault, all the while ignoring the subtle notion that they could have spoken up to say it was wrong but did not.

6. They're backpeddling 'cause it's horrible PR

Nightline actually did a segment in this
very thing a couple of days ago. (Not too
whorish...for them.)

I think earlier accounts of many stories are
more credible because they haven't been scrubbed
and censored yet, and witnesses intimidated by
the powers that be.

But them backpeddling from one detail of the
soldier's deaths doesn't hide the obvious fact
that the US forces are so despised in a city
that Bush Inc had claimed was friendly, that
two were murdered quite brutally.

7. The Nightline segment (last night)

Showed the bodies of both men, who had been pulled from their vehicles.

Their bodies had been looted of personal effects (affects?) and their vests. They said they were told the "slit throats" were actually cause by bullets.

I believe it is only going to get harder and harder to pretty up this war.

If there's propaganda going on, it's the other way around, it's the Bob Arnot stuff.
