Job market continues to weaken and to set records for severity
Job market continues to weaken and to set records for severity

Payroll jobs increased by 126,000 in October. While far preferable to further job losses, those job gains fall short of the 150,000 jobs a month necessary to prevent the slack in the labor market from worsening. Jobs remain 2.4 million below the level of March 2001 when the last recession began. This post-recession labor slump has now become the first (since the collection of monthly jobs data began in 1939) without a full recovery of jobs within 31 months of the start of a recession.

Instead of losing jobs over the last two and a half years, the economy should have added 4.5 million jobs just to keep up with growth in the working-age population. Actual job losses instead of needed job gains have created a total gap of 6.9 million jobs.

The record-long labor slump has caused many people to give up on finding a job and created a “missing” labor force of 2.3 million. If added to the 8.8 million officially unemployed, the “missing” labor force would raise the unemployment rate to 7.4%.

The weakening labor market has also brought an unprecedented 1.2% decline in total real wage and salary income over the last two and a half years. Americans today would have $61 billion more to spend today if their wages and salaries had kept pace with inflation and $346 billion more if their pay had kept up with the value of their output.

1. Those people might disappear from the news
But they're still here.

Get Out The Vote eforts at unemployment offices, job fairs, etc. might provide a great ROI.

2. I think much Democratic strategy...
...will rely on giving voice to/bringing out these "unseens," who don't have jobs, and often, don't vote...

I think the DLC has never taken this particular strategy very seriously...

5. Who let the idiot in the house?
Last time I looked, I was being taxed by a Republican House, a Republican Senate, and a Republican so-called "President."

6. Some facts for you.

Under Chimpy, and the republican-controlled legislature, we have seen an increase in spending.

I think that John McCain just lamented that fact a few days ago

Under Chimpy we have seen record yearly deficits (but please blame 9/11 again if you want to beat a dead horse as well), and we will continue to see them. Next year we will have a projected $500 Billion dollar dollar deficit.

Under Clinton we had prosperity, peace, plenty of money in the treasury and were paying down on the national debt.

I seem to remember Chimpy during the presidential debates saying we could have it all.

That's republicans for you. Lie, cheat and steal their way to get into power then they rob you blind and blame somebody else.

You are either incredibly naive or have an immeasurably dry wit.

8. *wiping tears away*
ROFLMAO!

Wow... that was a good one! A real knee slapper!

WhoooooeeeeEEE! "the economy is doing fine..."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Geezaloo! That's ... that's just grand. OH ho ho... good one.

I don't think I've laughed that hard in months!

You know, it must be nice to be so naive? To think that a dwindling tax base and plummeting revenues won't affect people or industries. Geez, I'd really like to be so blissfully ignorant. I mean, there's not much we can do about it, right? With all the 'smart' people backing free trade, our trade deficit is sure to keep growing... foreign investment is dropping like a rock... even US money managers are investing more and more in other currencies... etc., etc., etc.

10. Bush thinks that...................................
the loss of 2.4 million jobs means the economy is doing very well! Maybe he means the economy in Red China where those 2.4 million jobs went, is doing good! The "Fast Track" to ruin is the fast track we're on now! If Bush wins in 2004 Social Security among other things, is doomed along with more jobs that pay well!

Bush thinks people should be happy about trading the high paying jobs they had just 3 years ago, for a wonderful job at Walmart selling Chinese Junk? The same Chinese Junk that caused most of the good jobs in America to suddenly evaporate since Bush 'Took Over'!

Now Bush will lift the steel tariff and put still more American workers out to pasture! If Bush thinks the economy is really doing good, he must be as dumb as he looks! Of course things are just great for the wealthy 1% of Americans who happily donate to Bush and don't pay taxes anymore!
