In a bizarre cyber campaign feud centered on former Vice President Al Gore, aides to mayoral candidates Matt Gonzalez and Gavin Newsom traded accusations Sunday over who launched a mysterious plan to protest a speech Gore is scheduled to give at a Newsom event Tuesday.

Buzz about the protest in question has built up over the past five days, as e-mails announcing an anti-Gore street demonstration spread across the Internet. The e-mail, which at first glance seems to come from pro-Gonzalez Green Party advocates, calls for the anti-Gore rally as a way to "continue our struggle against the two-party system."

"Stop Newsom. Stop Gore. Stop the Democrats!!" the e-mail states.

But while Newsom's campaign manager condemned the protest as an example of "pranks and juvenile behavior," the Gonzalez campaign Sunday alleged that it was the Newsom campaign itself that had sent the e-mails, and accused Newsom supporters of concocting a fake Green Party protest as a way to smear both Gonzalez and the Greens.

3. Sounds like the Creeps are up to their old Watergate schtick
Watergate never stopped. In fact, I wouldn't hesitate to say that it has been multiplied in power and scope.

Creepy dirty tricks are now the Bushevik coin of the realm. Computers are hacked, phones are tapped and moles are planted.

Watergate was NOTHING compared to Bushevik malfeasance! Multiply THAT by the fact that our Himmlerian "Justice" Department will EVER investigate the malfeasance of their Bushevik Masters and you have a truly scary situation.

The Busheviks KNOW that they have the same chance of being punished for serving their Masters as the Brownshirts had of being investigated by Himmler.

The EXACT same chance.

0% chance.

God, I miss being a part of the Free World.

8. That's funny
I can count how many "protesters" they would be able to find in the city by the bay on one hand. And I wouldn't even have to use all my fingers. Figures that there would be an attempt to smear the GP though, what a dirty sneaky little trick.

9. in this day and age of espionnage, it could very well be that
Gonzalez placed one of his people in the Newsom camp and they went on the Newsom computers to send the message. So trotting out Professor Gunn means absolutely nothing. Hope he got paid well for this bs.

You can tell people all day long to "be above board", but if they're not inclined, or they 'see much glory in adventuring this enterprise', then they're going to do exactly what they feel they need to do in order to garner the glory of a successful enterprise.

10. Didn't the Repubs Invent
the now-famous "free speech" zone? Why don't they find a nice parking lot somewhere a few miles away, and have themselves guarded by a police security team.

That way they won't hurt themselves.

11. Here is the Indymedia story blaming Newsroom's camp
http://www.indybay.org/

Nine days away from the most important San Francisco election in recent history, Willie Brown's handpicked successor Gavin Newsom has been caught forging a mass email, also posted to this site, which calls for supporters of candidate Matt Gonzalez to protest a Tuesday campaign appearance by Mr. Newsom, where he will be accompanied by former Vice President Al Gore.

The protest announcement, which Green Party spokeswoman Susan King has publicly repudiated, was circulated anonymously through a web email provider. Gonzalez supporters discovered today however, that in the email header of the announcement was an IP address traced to the campaign headquarters of Gavin Newsom.

"The Green Party is the new power in San Francisco," reads the fraudlent announcement, in an attempt to paint the Green Party and Supervisor Gonzalez as power-hungry and anti-establishment.

“I didn’t think it could get any more bizarre and unseemly than Endorsementgate with Angela Alioto," said District 3 Supervisor Peskin, referring to the controvertial "Vice Mayor" position that Newsom reportedly offered to Alioto last week in exchange for her endorsement.

The San Francisco political elite behind Gavin Newsom are no stranger to employing underhanded tricks to get their candidates elected; in 2001 some 400 ballots went missing, and ballot box tops were found floating in the bay.

13. Okay, as a San Franciscan, I just want to point out a few things
1) the SF Examiner is a rag that is basically in bed w/ Willie Brown. When it does any real journalism it tends to the right.

2) Republicans (as far as I know) are not involved in this. The basic story is that an email went out to greens trying to get them to protest Gore's visit on behalf of Newsom. The email claimed to be from the Greens, but all evidence so far points to it having come from the Newsom camp. Since it's all just electrons, it'll probably never be known who really sent this, but this is not Matt Gonzalez' style. On the other hand, Newsom has been increasingly desperate in recent days. See the Brown racism comment and the lame Alioto endorsement if you don't believe me.

15. misleading title to this thread
The evidence points to Newsom, not the Greens. "Greens and Newsom" is an unlikely combination in any case.

First you all say change it from REPUBS, then someone asks why I changed it, then someone says it is misleading on edit. What all do you want. You all act like everything has to be perfect.

......God forbid someone mess up.

18. This is exactly why Rethugs are so fucking dangerous
Because winning is never enough. They have to make sure they have a total victory, and that nothing remains of their opposition. And if you think its bad enough when they legitimately win (which they do, maybe, somewhere, sometimes), its much worse where their victory is a fruad, such as Shrub's pResidency or the gaining of the Senate in 2002.
This is reminiscant of the "protests" for Roy Moore in Alabama:
All through that, all I could think was: "Let me get this straight. You guys are in control, you are getting your way just about all of the time, no one stops you from pushing your agenda, and you still have the nerve to 'protest'?"
See, the disturbing thing is that it isn't enough for Republican sychophantic morons to control ALL THREE branches of goverment. They still find reason to bitch.

19. Are the Greens in league with the
Repugs? I always wondered if the RNC hadn't lured in Ralph Nader and the Greens against Gore (using the Perot playbook to split the votes the way Ross did, resulting in Clinton's election), and now the Greens are protesting a Gore speech? Can it be more obvious?

is that Green haters will latch onto anything that fits their preconcieved notions regardless of facts.
