I just watched a program on AIDS orphans in Africa on Discovery Health Channel. It was heartrending and eye-opening.
These children are losing their parents, and this is only the beginning. By the end of the decade there will likely be 2 million orphans, left parentless due to the AIDS epidemic.
In developed countries, HIV is not necessarily a death sentence. In Africa, as in other impoverished places, it usually is. They don't have access to medicine that could allow them to lead somewhat normal lives and care for their children longer.
It will be on again twice tonight. 11 p.m. EST and 2 a.m. EST.
I think tomorrow I will be writing to a few very rich people, and suggesting a good use for their funds (other than the ever-popular gluttony).
