I was just thinking about Alan Colmes, the ultimate Uncle Tom, phony sellout of our time. Sure, he probably considers himself a "moderate democrat" or whatever, and thinks that he's "bringing balance" to the right-wing Fox Snake Pit. All sell-outs and whores have ways of rationalizing their BS.

Colmes makes millions by being Hannity's prison beeyotch, NEVER standing up for liberals or liberal ideas. He lends Fox a phony and undeserved veneer of credibility by his presence. He's even had the nerve to publish a book of his repuke-friendly pablum.

Would YOU ever sell out progressive/liberal ideals for a big enough paycheck?

Putting petrol in your car is selling out. Paying taxes to support a coup against the constitution is selling out.

I don't agree that selling out is a job related thing.

We were sold out by our parents long ago.

I think selling out has more to do with spirituality and one's world view. If you have goodwill towards all human beings and nurture in yourself silent awareness of "god" (or whatever you call it) then selling out happens all the time, and returning to the razor's edge also happens when we overturn the ego and its rigid dominance.

I've sold out. I am a buddhist in an evangelical (mahayana) tradition, but i do not help other people learn meditation. It sits on my heart like a weight.

No matter where the paycheque comes from, selling out is indeed highly personal... but i think it mostly when you accept that life is not infinite love and beauty... to be silent in love, accepting death and all fears and egotism as passing clouds in the moment of life.

It is impossible to sell out. The spirit of life to which all living things are bound in their short transitory existance is a machine far greater and wiser than any human mind... rather selling out is to accept and indulge in suffering. Its a religious thing.

13. So what's your difference between selling out and adapting?

To me, if I went along with every ideal that those on my side supported, in violation of what I believed to be right, I'd be selling out. For instance, I'm at odds here at DU over NAFTA, the JFK assassination, and finding an electable (as opposed to pure) candidate. Would I be selling out, then, for supporting NAFTA,or for going along with the DU herd and opposing it, even though my conscience tells me otherwise?

I ask, not because I want to start a NAFTA debate (I truly don't), but because I'm not sure whether Colmes has sold out, or is merely being true to values that I don't hold. Same is true of Lieberman. I would even ask the question of Kucinich, who has consistently voted anti-choice, but who just in time for the presidential campaign has converted to pro-choice. I like his opinion better now, but was it an honest conversion, or a sellout to our side?

You could argue that Colmes has not sold out but Kucinich has, if by selling out you mean changing your views to further your own advancement, as opposed to meaning holding views which are at odds with others of your party.

I don't know. I like Kucinich better than Colmes, regardless, though frankly I've seen maybe two minutes of Colmes in my life, and couldn't tell him from Hannity if you paid me to.

And one more avenue. What Republicans have sold out? Limbaugh, whose message has nothing to do with any ideal other than his own pocket book, is a sellout, whereas Pat Buchanan or Ron Paul are true to their values, horrible racist beasts though they be. Which do you respect more-- a conservative who changes his mind to agree with you, or one who sticks to his honest beliefs even when it contradicts the party?

I've got a management position in a company that does nothing but provide an opportunity for enjoyment to people who can afford it. I make one half of what I would in a 'real world' company, but it's four times what I ever made in a less compromised position and ten times what I ever 'made' as an organizer thirty plus years ago.

I don't think anything I do now is wrong, but very little of what I do now (professionally) contributes much to the progress of mankind as a whole.

So, yes, I've sold out, but I still have standards :-).

19. In defense of Alan Colmes, it depends upon who his employer is.

WEVD-AM (before Disney bought and banished it from the dial in New York City in 2001) had management that more or less allowed Alan to produce the kind of program that he wanted, without interference or restrictions. You never had a doubt where Alan stood and he didn't back down. And he was quite witty and wry as well.

The new Alan Colmes syndicated show belongs entirely to the FOX Network. And thus, so does Alan. I am certain that the FOX management reviewed the tapes of his former show and bluntly told him, "Not on our dime, you don't!" So being "fair and balanced", FOX "lets" Alan go through the motions of being liberal, progressive, etc. But trust me, this is a sliver of talent and passion that he possesses.
