Dude wants to know this:
just wondering about the impact of the tax cuts and if they help me or hurt me.
I responded (like Dean) with this:
I'm no expert and you're free to believe what you want but consider this. State and local governments are hurting. The feds took money away from colleges and states that GOT fed money took that away from colleges. Thus, you may get an $800 check in the mail but the state may raise it's taxes to compensate. Your county or town will likely raise your property taxes and college tuition is going through the roof. This is of course piled on to the fact that the 100s of billions spent on the war have turned record surplus into record deficit that our grandchildren will be living with. I pay taxes too and I don't like it any more than the next guy. Seems to me like a bamboozle. If you want studies I can look for them.
He also says:
well i didnt get a check. i think only people with kids got that? nice discrimination by our gov against non-breeders. anyway, i thought there was a payroll tax decrease? last year, with me claiming 0 deductions, i still owed money! this was after a full year of mortgage and other itemized deductions. 18,000 worth. what gives?
Is there anything I can tell this guy to help him understand that the tax cuts aren't helping him? Something with actual numbers would be great. Thanks.
