Daschle ( on Daily Show): Medicare lost w/ ONE vote?

I just watched the rerun of Daily Show.. I must have missed the first part, because unless I misheard Daschle said the final vote on Medicare in the Senate lost by one vote. Stewart asked him if Kerry or Edward's votes would have mattered and Daschle said YES!! It was the final vote, and Edwards and Kerry had left the building, probably timed by the Repukes. Is this true--no speciality to candidate here, I just want to know is this true?!

2. Jon asked him if the two Senators who missed the vote

would have counted, and I believe Daschle said yes. Really want a transcript about now. I was so grossed out by Daschle's smarmy answers on Defense of Marriages (That May Work) Act, it took a second viewing.

4. I just watched rerun on West coast. Kerry/Edwards were there for key vote!

According to Dashle.

Including Kerry and Edwards votes they had 59; needed 60
to stop the medicare privatization.
