Tax anger unleashed. (Indiana Du'ers)
http://www.southbendtribune.com/stories/2003/12/02/local.20031202-sbt-MARS-A1-Tax_anger.sto

Have you Indiana DU'ers checked your property tax lately? Mine skyrocketed up the chart but I was lucky. Some people I know had their more than double. Is there any way this can be tied to the current administration?

1. It was discovered in the 80's
That cutting the Federal Government programs and shoving all the costs down to the states where they have to force balance their budgets, that the Fed's get away with it with little blame. Your property tax bill is just a continuation of Repub policy in the beltway.

3. That's correct. It's another shell game. They cut federal taxes,
but your local taxes will rise. And if the federal government has waste, the local government has corruption. Watch very closely who handles your bonds. Most people are not aware that there are cozy relationships between local government and the people they do business with. Forget the blind bids. It doesn't exist at the good ole boy network level. The unseen hand is often the city attorney. Watch closely to see if he has any special relationship with the bond company. It's happened before and they continue to get away with it with just a slap on the wrist.

4. Same thing here in Ohio
My very typical middle-class niece and husband were shocked to find out that the child tax refund they rec'd from Uncle Sammy was not quite enough to pay for the increase in property and local income taxes. They had not planned on using it for taxes.....maybe now, they will start voting. And, oh yeah, the new overtime law will likely knock them right on out of middle class to low middle class or bankruptcy. So much for the American dream.

:argh:

5. Over the past three years
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 08:04 AM by JM
my property taxes went up over 120%. Our was because of a court ordered reassessment and a change in the way property values are determined. I am in PA.

You are, however, correct about the pushing down of taxes to the states. My monthly check increased by an amount enough for an extra large pizza per month. My local and state taxes are going up by significantly more than 12 pizzas per year.

I am facing a significan pizza deficit next year. Good thing I am on a diet.

Later,
JM

6. IL has lost some 1700 manufacturing co.s in 2 years
180,000 decent paying jobs gone. All the factories that close, take their tax money right back out of the till. All new businesses get into a TIF or Enterprise Zone. We have a new factory that employs about 20 people for under $20,000. The company gets a 20 year property tax break, For 20 jobs right around the poverty wage. Welcome to the "Repub Wet Dream" America. I have been screaming for 2 and a half years, taxes never go down for the middle and lower class, Never!

Whenever you hear a repug claim libs are for the redistribution of wealth, they are really talking about themselves. They want to go back to the pre-labor-movement days here in America. Walmart and the credit card companies are the modern day company stores.

7. Oh, yeah...
a direct result of the combination of state and federal tax revenue going down and local subsidies cut while expenses are going up.

Everyone's local taxes have been going up. It's a "last in line" phenomenon. State and national officials campaign on tax cuts, and the mayors and town councils are left holding the bag.

8. Huge Bush tax cuts cut aid to states, force states and local gov to raise
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 10:09 AM by loudnclear
taxes to offset Federal aid loses. Simple as that. Not only property taxes are being raised to offset the loss of Federal revenue but highway and bridge tolls have doubled in NJ and some other places and this is a regressive tax on the working men and women who have to comute to work everyday to make a living. Couple increased state and local taxes with ever-increasing gasoline prices and you have a major debacle with direct roots to this administration no matter how the Repugs try to spin it.
Only the wealthy are unaffected...they make out like bandits. How you ask? The wealthy not only get huge tax cuts but the increases in gasoline and tolls, hotels etc. increases their deductions on their expense accounts so they get the benefit of taking even more off their taxes...but you and I don't.

9. Leave No Child Behind, etc.
Standardized tests and schools that perform well on them are helping pushing up rates.

10. Every state suffered a $1 billion shortfall thanks to all of the...
...program funding cut at the Federal level by the NeoCon Junta.

To make up for that shortfall, many states have had to resort to a number of programs designed to increase state revenues like increased property taxes, increased sales taxes, etc.

Those that haven't been able to put together revenue producing programs have had to cut the equivalent amount of state programs. That has usually resulted in cuts to social services and education.

Additionally, the recent Medicare bill will result in additional turmoil at the state levels. Just wait until they cut the guts out of Social Security...because that is definitely next on the NeoCon domestic agenda.
