Congressmen want to replace FDR with Reagan on the dime
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=35925

This is absolutely sickening. Some GOP memebers of congress are lobbying to have Ronald Reagan's image placed on the Dime to replace FDR. Some quotes.

"It is particularly fitting to honor the Freedom President on this particular piece of coinage because, as has been pointed out, President Reagan was wounded under the left arm by a bullet that had ricocheted and flattened to the size of a dime,"

"FDR believed the federal government should spend your dimes. Ronald Reagan believed the people should spend their own dimes. I think it's clear that the dimes in your pocket should bear Ronald Reagan's image," co-sponsor Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif.,

1. FDR Belongs On The Dime For All Time
Because he had polio and he first used the term "march of dimes" to suggest fundraising to help find a cure for polio. This led to the March of Dimes, and eventually the Salk and Sabin vaccines.

4. But he's not the "Freedom President"!!!
I don't know, these GOP arguments are really convincing me. THis whole "Freedom President" thing. I think William McKinley is on the $500 bill. Maybe we can replace him with Dubya when he leaves office. After all, how fitting that Dubya be on a $500 bill when it is he who allowed those with plenty of $500 bills in their pocket to get a tax break to spend more of their $500 bills.

12. No, give the Gipper squat
he's not replacing Franklin Roosevelt or Jack Kennedy on any of my currency.

How about a Ronald Reagan Memorial Toilet, in honor of all the bullshit he spewed.

I want mine inscribed with:

"Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do."
-- Ronald Reagan, 1981

11. Gawd, more Grover Norquist b.s.
Read about this in the local daily a couple of days ago.

In my hometown there's a Reagan monument on the street that had a tavern Reagan used to drink at and chase skirts went he worked for a local radio station before going to Hollywood.

The tavern's gone and the monument's in front of a seedy bail-bondsman's office. It's about a block so so from the county courthouse and, so I'm told, attorneys who smoke often put their cigaretts out in the open mouth of Reagan's image on the monument.

14. St. Ronald lacks the two essential qualities for coinhood:
He neither:
1) was a Founding Father, nor
2) died in office (as with horseshoes, "almost" isn't good enough).

Hell, he isn't even dead yet!

I keep reminding the zealots who want to "balance" JFK & FDR's names with the Gipper's that they missed their big chance years ago -- if they REALLY wanted Ronnie's name as prominent as Jack's or Franklin's, they shouldn't have let him leave office alive. That is, in the end, the REAL reason JFK and FDR have so many things named after them: because they died in office, in the line of duty as it were, not just because they were "liberal icons".

17. Died in Office?
I think you have the test wrong.

Reagan doesn't deserve to be on a coin because he was a bad President, but remember that Jefferson, Washington and Sacagawea are on US coins, and none of them died in office.

21. Founding Fathers.
And Sacajawea could be vaguely considered a founding mother, on account of showing us so much real estate.

22. You're right, but not how you think
mobuto, I agree that Reagan doesn't deserve to be on a coin, but just saying " he was a bad president" sounds like the same subjective sour grapes that the Self-Annointed Legions of St. Ronald use to justify putting his name everywhere: "When you libruls ran things you put your heros' names on half the public works of this country; now WE're in charge, and it's only fair we get to do the same."

FDR and JFK have so many things named after them not because they were liberal icons but because they died in office and it was one of those "pulling together to honor the fallen" things.

What do we have on our coins? An assortment of nationalist/patriotic symbols, Founding Fathers (Washington, Jefferson), and Lincoln, FDRoosevelt, and Kennedy (three presidents who died in office).

I'd forgotten about the dollar coins: Eisenhower, Susan B Anthony, and Sacajawea, but they argue against Reagan too: Ike's coin was more for his role in WW2 than for his presidency and wasn't particularly partisan even though he ran as a Republican; Sacajawea (as aquart noted) is (sort of) a founding mother, and also a moden incarnation of the various Indian heads and motifs that fall under nationalist/patriotic symbols.

And what of Suzy B? You can either group her as a "founding mother" or as an argument why coins should feature noncontroversial persons which we all can agree on. ( (for those too young to remember, the conservatives went apesheiss in the late 70s when the Suzy B was introduced, since -- given the Treasury's plan being to replace the $1 bill with the $1 coin -- The Gum'mint was symbolicly replacing George Washington, Father of our Country, with Susan B. Anthony, "Feminist Icon". That's the kind of imagery the Reaganites used to get into Washington).

19. Oh, Christ
Freedom President? Excuse me? Which one fought a war for freedom? Sure as hell wasn't Reagan - he sat that one out and then invaded Grenada. Glad that Grenadan threat was taken care of, because it sure gave me nightmares to think of the grand Grenadan infantry sweeping across the plains of Kansas, destroying all in their wake.
