Poll question: Where do you fit in on this political scale?

This is not the best format for such a question, so feel free to contradict, suggest alternatives ( I may not have got the sliding scale quite right - it's almost impossible to get right) etc.

On edit - one problem is with definition - there's about 1000 possible definitions of personal views, and to a Canadian a Liberal has different meaning than to an American.

On edit redux - Or do you fit in? If not, what are your views?

1. I think some definitions would help

To me the term "Social Democrat" is vague. It means different things in different countries.

That said, I felt obliged to choose "Anarchist" because it's closest to my own philosophy, as I understand the choices presented here.

2. This is a problem. I see Social Democrat as the left of the Dem Party,

the mainstream on the Canadian NDP, and the (proper - non Blair) UK Labour Party. Charles Kennedy of the LibDems is a Social Democrat. I see Dennis Kucinich as a Soc. Dem, as possibly Howard Dean is, or at least that's the idea I get.

and up til a year ago he was Center Right.

Clark is the closest to Kucinich on the Left.

I'm not an expert on Dean. I was thinking of his 'Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party' quote. That would define to me a Soc. Dem. Whether Dean is or not is another matter.

I'm a moderate libertarian, if you can believe such an animal exists. Don't assume there aren't any people who lean that way around here. Libertarian-leaning people like me often have good relations with both Democrats and Republicans, though sometimes there are hard feelings. The end result is we tend to be found in both groups, and can identify with either on different issues. I proudly claim the moniker of liberal, though I mean it in an old fashion sense. The modern connotation implies some views that I don't hold dear, however. If you were to ask me, democratic means some things that aren't exemplified with the Democratic Party and republican means some things that aren't exemplified with the Republican Party. The Libertarian Party on the other hand is too extreme for me. What good does it do to argue about toll roads when there's the drug war?

Me too. That's why I have not joined the Libertarian Party. I agree with most of their core principles, but they give business too much free reign IMO.

But seriously, I wholeheartly agree with you about the Libertarian Party. I find it too extreme for my tastes, though I often agree in general terms with both the economic and social concepts. Ideals are fine but I have a pragmatic streak which gets me into trouble with the 'purists.'
