9/11....Cooked up Politically Correct
The fear which prevades the public concerning the possibility of another 9/11 style of attack is our biggest obstacle. Following is an attempt at forming a new and politically correct way of being able to:

1) Alleviate that fear

2) Get people to become more rational when thinking about what happened that day

Now, this writer is a MIHOP, LIHOP, TRIHOP, PNACHOP, any kind of HOP coulda happened, kinda guy. But when I talk to folks about 9/11 using any of those various theories, they usually run screaming from the room!

So,,, Here's my TIC idea:

From now on, I'll say: 9/11 won't happen again. It can't. The Feds are not going to allow it to happen again, of that we can be certain. The bad guys snuck under the radar once, surely they will be stopped the next time.

The US Air defense people are now on alert. What they once considered to be only a possibility, they now know, was instead very real. If a plane gets hijacked again it WILL be taken care of.

There's nothing to worry about. The Whitehouse, caught by surprise the first time, now has an active section dealing with stopping terrorist attacks in this country. They have had over two years preparing, you know they will do the right thing this time.

The FBI and the CIA, caught with their pants down the first time, will not be so easily undressed again. Asshcroft and the Justice Department will not allow the "Long Arm of the Law" to once again be so ineffective.

Most of the Generals who wre in charge that day have retired and gone on to greener pastures, so we know they won't be able to let our air defenses fail again. A new, brighter bunch is now in command at the Pentagon. Rumsfeld learned his lesson that day, right?

Instead of us running around proclaiming "The Sky Is Falling" we can now be rest assured that what was broken that day has now been fixed.

Go shopping, don't worry, be happy!

6. Some people will get it....some won't
Notice that I do not mention * even once. There is no PC in attacking him personally.

Besides, if you really believe the attack was developed completely outside of the CONUS, then you are too far gone as it is. And if he does manage to get another attack going, he'll pay dearly for it.

9. Silverhair..
I had no idea you were a LIHOP kinda person. Or a Pinochio, for that matter. You never tell a little white lie? Good on you.

I, however, am a sinner. I will spin the facts around in order to make progress toward the outcome I desire. It is politically correct to do so, wouldn't you say?

4. Different approach
Set it up so that if something DOES happen it'll be squarely on George Bush's head:

* What I worry about is that Bush hasn't taken enough precautions, as he should have: cargo crates aren't being examined or searched, Homeland Security is underfunded, many of our first responders were also Reservists and are off in Iraq, no investigation of 9-11 occurred so that we made any changes to correct the intelligence failures that allowed 9-11 to happen, etc.

* We have the best intelligence in the world and it should have stopped the attacks of 9-11 -- if anything more happens, I'll be blaming George Bush.

7. AND
Every innocent we kill in Iraq breeds a dozen more who want to get revenge on Americans.

5. Why don't you just tell them why you're not in fear...
I refuse to live in fear because of a tragic event.
The terrorists want us to live in fear of them. The terrorists want us to altar our lives & our government in reaction to this event. There's no doubt that 9/11 changed us, but how we change is up to us. There is no one path to take after such an event, and it is up to our leaders to set that path. Our leaders have failed us, setting a tone of fear instead of rebuilding.

The changes that have been brought upon this country have lived right up to the terrorists' expectations. We now fear our neighbors. We're afraid to travel. Our government has put restrictions on our rights. If you agree with Bush's statement that "terrorists hate freedom," and we're continuing to drive ourselves into further self-suppression, then the terrorists are winning. Mission accomplished - and our Government has also succumbed to fear - through unilateralism, preemptive & untargeted war, unprecedented expansion of executive powers & suppression of our Constitutional rights. Whether the White House & Congress know it or not, they are furthering the terrorists' agenda.

We don't have to live like this. We can hold our heads high, boldly walk down OUR streets, keep our eyes open. We can WORK with our neighbors - down the street & across the ocean - to prevent further attacks. Most people are not terrorists, terrorist sympathizers or traitors. Most people condemn these actions. I refuse to allow my fellow Americans to attack each other, divide this country, and divide the world because of a handful of FANATICS. The only reason the terrorists are doing that is because we're letting them.

What else can we be doing? Terrorism is a global problem that requires a global solution. In the days following 9/11 we had the support of the world - even IRAN pledged their support days before Bush named them to the "axis of evil". We squandered the world support through our mistrust and refusal to steer from the PNAC course of unilateralism.

In a time of tragedy - personal or national - and somebody asks "how can we help?", you can do two things: you can accept their offer, or - out of pride or mistrust of their motives - you can push them aside. One choice is constructive, the other is destructive to ourselves and others. Bush made the wrong choice, and has led our country down a destructive path. Only he is accountable for that - not the terrorists of 9/11. They did their damage in a few short minutes - the rest depends upon how we conduct ourselves in a time of tragedy.

But there are those who are so perplexed by the whole damn thing that your reasoning only works on those who are on first base already. My attempt is to get them to stand in the batter's box and take swings.

With the pitcher we've got, the chances are good they will get a walk. Once they get on base, then you become the third base coach waving them around toward home. Gotta get 'em standing at home plate first, with a good bat.
