34. As terrible as Nixon was,
it's quite instructive to go back and see news footage about him during his first term. While I always thought the notion that "only Nixon could go to China" was blindingly hypocritical, he actually accomplished some amazing things. OSHA was one of him.

You'd think he was a liberal, to look at what he did.

The entire Watergate episode totally poisoned both terms -- it cast a backward shadow on the first one that it doesn't deserve.

All that said, I felt the only reason to attend his funeral (or watch it on TV which I did) was to make certain the SOB was really and truly dead. He should have died in jail.

39. LOL!
Not that I know of.

However, back in 1969 and 70 I was convinced my phone was being tapped, although I couldn't begin to imagine why. Friends who'd call me up also heard the same kinds of sounds that sounded like a clumsy tap on the line.

I was (and still am) an absolute nobody. At the time I was a ticket agent at National Airport in Washington DC, was not involved in any kind of politics. At the time I was still too young to vote. It was age 21 then. I led an innocuous life, going to work, coming home, socializing on weekends. I did my share of the things many of us did then in the days before AIDS, but trust me, not to any unusual degree.

I've seriously considered filing a Freedom Of Information Act request to see if there's a file on me. I probably should. It might be interesting.

As a student of history (I am 47 years old) I can assure you that no other president was as inept, as dangerous, or showed such a callous disregard for the constitution, or was as secretive as G.W. Bush. Hands down he is the winner.

I've always thought that if Al Qaeda REALLY wanted to destroy America, all they would have to do is sit back, put their feet up, take it easy and watch George W Bush do their dirty work for them.

I hope I don't get arrested for giving terrorists ideas about how to destroy our country, but if they were REALLY serious about giving our beloved nation the Deep Six, what they should do is donate to the Re-(S)elect George W Bush campaign.

23. Nixon's The One
It's obvious those on this string didn't have the pleasure to witness "That 70's Show" in the flesh.

A couple things about Nixon vs. this regime. At least based on what we know (no LIHOP/MIHOP, please). Nixon used the CIA, IRS and FBI to actively go after his political enemies. We don't have any proof that any such operation at such a large scale on such a high level exists. I'm sure Rove is a lot smarter than that.

There's a lot of the same obsessive press manipulation/control going on here (Agnew & Buchanan were the Coulter & Rush of their days) and but Nixon was ruthless against his enemies in the press (witness: Dan Rather & Daniel Shorr). Those men lived under a virtual fatwa.

Finally, Nixon rigged an election. His operatives destroyed any "mainstream" Democrat...then created havoc with the McGovern campaign. A lot of the stuff this regime has tried, Nixon wrote the book on. While we can argue that Florida was just as bad...this set the precedence that a well-discipline and funded political machine can do a lot of damage before it gets caught and then pay with very little.

Dubya gets my vote for the most inept. That is a close one with Harding, Coolidge and Raygun in the 20th Century and Grant, Pierce and Fillmore in the 19th. It's the square peg in the round hole...and even Chimpster's friends know it; thus the never-ending forced adoration and re-affirmation that he's really a man.

36. Time Will Tell...
We're still learning of the Nixon skuldugery 30 years afterwards, and I'm certain we have just a scent of the odor of this regime. My post is purely based on what we know.

Rove's tricks, unethical and ruthless as they are, at least have been legal...along the molds of an Atwater...smart thugs...Nixon didn't have such finesse or the trust in anyone who did.

The danger with Dubya is he's so clueless and so much is being done under his naive nose. He's so arrogant and avoids any sense of guilt or responsibility thus wouldn't or doesn't care even when wrongs are exposed. He's certain a way will be found to bury any corpse...it always is.

Nixon was a micromanager...he knew all and manipulated all. On the whole far more dangerous. But also easier to localize the damage.

25. James Buchanan, Millard Filmore, and Nixon:
Edited on Fri Dec-05-03 10:54 PM by mdguss
Bush is bad--he ranks among the five worst.

Fillmore was a member of an organized crime gang, and did our county no good. Nixon was a criminal, and single handidly undermined many people's faith in the system, and Buchanan (though a Democrat) lacked the courage to stand for what he thought was right. He led the party and the country into disarray, and had a large part in casuing a war that cost an entire generation. Many of the policies used in that war--suspension of habius corpus, increased federal powers, etc. are the basis for the Patriot Act.

So, Bush, though bad is not the worst.

BushCo has alienated us from the rest of the world, and doesn't give a shit about *anything* but big bucks and power.

With Nixon, at least there was a Democratic congress and some checks and balances in place -- and the press was interested in going after him.

Now, the press is *'s biggest booster. Big business loves him. They screw up left and right, but no one dogs them down.

Dark times.

46. He Couldn't Stand Kids...
Nixon did worse...he prolonged the Vietnam War for 4 years...escalating it in 1970 for his own political purposes. Thousands of our young men and women died for his "peace with honor" bullshit that just prolonged the ultimate result.

He was also ready to pull the trigger on the USSR when he put our military on it's highest ever alert during the Yom Kippur War in '73 and it was Kissinger (oh geesh) who claims to have kept him from doing other crazy adventures. Too bad the cooks and crooks in this regime are in far stronger control.

Nixon was a pure political animal who put his own hide above everything...including the Constitution.
