1. Nobody
If the Dems lose in 2004, that's it. Game over. Dictatorship reigns and Democracy flatlines after the near fatal blow it took on December 10, 2000.

Or if there is an election, it will be a choice between Jeb Bush and Neil Bush.

5. Kucinich I hope
If we run yet another Clinton/Gore moderate, it will vindicate everything the REAL "democratic wing of the Democratic party" has been saying all these years.

Although I seriously hope it won't come to that.

9. that can't be right
If Dean wins the nom and loses, it will push the Dems back to the center and Clinton style politics. People will say, we tried to attack and run left and couldn't win that way...let's go back to what worked in the 90's. And of course that will lead to Hillary Clinton.

6. Interesting question.
I think there will be a huge struggle for the soul of the party. It will be the centerist vs. the stronger leftists.

11. What a scary thought, Silverhair..
But that may very well be the case. The liberal left wing will leave the Democratic Party. The centrists will try to keep the Democratic Party alive, but it will be an impossible mission without the liberal base of the Party...

7. What nonsense and defeatism.
I refuse to even contemplate such a disaster. We will win in 2004 because we must win in 2004. Our country and our future demand this.

Stop wasting time with idle speculation and make it happen!

no better than 50/50 chance we have to win it. To not think about the possibilities and plan for them may lead to us self-destructing as a party afterwards.

I'm optimistic it will be a close election.

It could be a blowout. A lot depends on whether the economy improves next year. I don't think we have a snowball's chance in hell if we start seeing 400,000+ jobs getting created a month and a robust recovery.

26. There's only one way chimp will create even 100,000 net jobs during his
term of office.

If the draft is reinstated.

Soldiers can't be counted in the rolls of the unemployed, and new military jobs will be counted as net additions.

28. I don't think that a loss in 2004 will be the end of Democracy
(unless we lose all 50 states...which would consecrate the rw attempts to destroy dialogue)

I don't want Hillary to run ever. Just because by then the Clinton's will have been out of the White House for seven years, doesn't mean Faux won't stop chirping about the Clintons (didn't Republicans fixate over Carter as recently as the early '90s?). That said, I think we have a lot of good choices. My picks:

Al Gore: Could come back in a Nixonesque sense.

Russ Feingold: Progressive reformer, as a co-sponser of campaign finance reform, he's the more liberal version of McCain.

Elliot Spitzer: Seems unlikely, but he has charisma.

Rod Blagoyavich (sp?)- Young, charismatic, hear he's a strong Governor.

I wish I could say John Edwards, but because he decided not to run again, this seems slim to nil. Too bad.

They're probably more people, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

.....BTW, If Giuliani chose to run in 2008 (since they're Republicans who've considered it) would he and Jeb Bush split the Republicans in a nasty primary (ie. Northern/Rudy delegates vs. Southern/Jeb delegates) and cause our candidate to win? Or am I being too idealistic?

30. No elections under Martial Law
Terror will be rampant. Ridge will keep Red Alert for 365 days of the year, most of our young men and women will be in the desert dying from RPG attacks and the Administration will have declared Martial Law, which means complete lockdown police state. Elections are pretty much nil. The dictatorship has begun.

32. The rightwing
Current finger in the air says that the rightwing is chosing our nominee; therefore, we lose. After that the party will be split by the defenders of their choice and the I-told-you-so's. Not me, BTW. I've tried to talk some sense here, but it is a new and up hill battle everyday.

Anyway, if or when the struggle insues the party will need to rebuild. That is going to be very hard. Clinton might have tried to lay the ground work for rebuilding, but he was kept busy saving his hide. So, the rebuilding would take years if ever.

If we lose in 2004 we are condemned to living under repubs for the rest of my life. Privatized schools, no safety net worth a tinkers damn, crappy environment, a complete media takeover, a wider gulf between rich and poor, a healthcare system that reflects the gulf between rich and poor, and an endless resource war is what happens if we lose in 2004. There will be no Democratic savior emerge in 2008. The vilification of anything Democratic and democratic will be complete.

The media runs this country, and the media belongs to the GOP. We know that, and yet we just let shit happen.

36. To expand the base
You must have a leader in the White House, otherwise you just end up herding cats. Clinton should be the leader of the party right now, but many, many posters on this board seem to hate the man.

Watching this trainwreck is making me sick.

37. Will you people who are responding Pollyannalike to this thread
please GET A CLUE! If * is re-Selected in 2004 the rightwing coup, which started with 5 felonious SC justices, will become fait accompli, meaning IT IS OVER. Bush*'ll probably be able to take some more Senate and House seats with him and then the "reorganization" of our democracy will begin in earnest. Believe me, Diebold will then be the law of the land, a draft will be reinstated, and we'll have a military dictatorship as soon as dissent against King *'s "war on terra" gets out of hand (probably the day of his inauguration).

39. Well said. The Democratic Party will cease to exist as a viable force...
We are up against the wall right now -- no more wiggle-room.

The RW has made some significant victories in the last 2 months -- Arnold in California, the Medicare bill, the phoney economic "recovery" polls. And they haven't even seriously dipped into their DEEP war che$t to date -- a record amount of money for an unopposed sitting president.

We will have to fight uphill all the way next year. The phrase "if we don't make it" in absolutely unthinkable.

I dont even want to deal with having to put up with bush for another term .If ever a presiedent deserved to be a one termer , this one fits evry reason to be voted out ,after never being voted in ! Its to depressing to think the people of this country are so lame to give this worst of the worst ,four more years.. I say we put Gore and Clark together as our dream team , and if nothing else we can win on brain power alone ! We need to scream over the corperate owned media and get the truth out to the American voters about this gang of thieves destroying our country !
