Roosevelt is on the dime because of his support for the March of Dimes, an organization for polio sufferers. It just so happened that the President was afflicted with polio himself (thought I should mention that in case any Freepers are around).

15. anyone here old enough to remember the March of Dimes?

I remember in fifth grade getting those sheets with the little half-pockets that just fit a dime. I think there were 10 or 20 of thelittle pockets, so if you put in a dime a week it took you a couple of months or so to come up with a buck.

we also got lessons about the kids we were helping, 'Weekly Reader' stories about the doctors trying to find a vaccine, and we learned that determined people could work together to make things better. and even the poorer kids usually could come up with a dime a week. it did our self-esteem good , though nobody called it that at the time.people working off of MoD money cured cancer.

i still send a few bucks to the March of Dimes now and then. they're still working on preventing birth defects and childhood illnesses. as far as i know they are an impeccable nonprofit charity. good for them.
