You don't think the media "endorsed" the idea that Gore was a liar in 2000? It seemed that almost every story trumpted the fact he made a misstatement regarding his mother-in-laws prescription expenditures or a missing FEMA director. Oh yes, Gore lied because he said he didn't invent the Internet.

OTOH. Gov. Bush was a drunk most of his adult life. That didn't get much coverage, at all.

Fast forward to 2003: Who's on the cover of TIME and Newsweek, and featured in US News & World Report — all in the same week? Why, it's Howard. Did they mention the draft dodging?

10. If Big Media is Afraid of Dean ...

The fact he's leading by 30 freaking points in New Hampshire is another indicator (the other would be their shock at his 2nd quarter financing announcement) of just how much he's been underestimated.

Mainstream media paid no attention to Dean whatsoever until the stunning summer report. If they'd picked him as a candidate to lose - and wanted him to - they would have been singing his praises before June.

Now that he's come out and said he'd be in favor of re-regulation of the media, their attitude towards him in the next few weeks will be telling, ie, just how seriously do they take the threat of re-regulation.

Boosting Dean by Burying Him

Deborah Orin is buying my theory that the recent criticism of Howard Dean by prominent Republicans is a move to boost Dean's stature:
"It's very smart - every time they pick fights with Dean, it just serves to elevate him in the Democratic race," says a Republican strategist. "It's good for both of them. Both sides want a Dean-Bush race."

Why? Because polls suggest Dean would be pretty close to the weakest Dem against Bush and he offers the sharpest contrast in ideology and personal style.

So this week Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie went to Dean's home state of Vermont to zing him, then did it again last night in politically potent New Hampshire - and he hit Dean harder than any other Dem has.

Republicans are trying to cleverly take advantage of the surprise dynamic of the race - attacking Dean just reinforces his support. And since Dean fans hate, hate, hate Bush, they love Dean even more when Bush allies attack him.
As I've suggested, if Dean's momentum in Iowa and New Hampshire begins to stall, President Bush should himself consider saying a few negative things about Dean.

and that in turn leads to more coverage. Plus Dean has a better rapid-response team than Kerry or Clark does.

So I'd say no, the media is not trying to influence the primary in favor of any one candidate.

But I do think they try to marginalize ALL of them by inviting people like Kucinich, Braun and Sharpton into the debates knowing that they have no shot at the nomination and aren't polling any better than 1 or 2% (with the exception of Sharpton in SC).

What do all of these any many more stories and issues have in common?

If you said that the media lied to us either directly or by neglecting to report an issue, then we have found common ground. Now, I suggest that the media lies to shape the public's reality. Maybe you think that "first amendments zones" are just a non-issue and media goes where there is story. With that I totally disagree.

The 2004 election is the biggest prize of all: Big for every boardroom flunky, big for every million dollar talking head, big for all the wrong reasons.

Why with such a prize in sight anyone would believe that the corporate media has suddenly decide to serve the public, is truly beyond me. The self-inflicted wool pulling is sad to watch. The spinning would be laughable if you weren't taking me down with you.

Let me try to be more clear, although there are several issues here.

The media shapes Americas reality. There is example after example of them doing just exactly that. Also, part of their usual MO is to play "look over there" think Michael Jackson, or just ignore a major story altogether.

Now considering how many rants I've read on DU decrying the media, which today has very little to do with actual journalism at all, why would people here think that the media would be doing anything less when faced with the big 2004 prize? Any yet, there are those here that refuse to accept the obvious. Why? Because the media has chosen Dean, and they are happy to accept that choice.

I'm pissed, really pissed because I have to watch this disgusting spectacle unfold. My life in this country will adversely be effected by bush's election in 2004. Moreover, my daughter's life will be even more greatly be effected.

If people want to deny what they have seen over and over again to be true, that is their business. That sham trip to Vermont by the RNC is just part of the package. Does anyone think for one minute that they do not know that Dems were getting nervous about the Hume puff piece or Tweety's fondling of the Dean candidacy? Don't even get me started on Woodruff. Consider it an innoculation for the candidate they can put down the most easily. Raise taxes, no foreign policy, from the NE, and yelling. Oh please.

..making Dean out to be THE best man for the job, they're complimenting him, constantly giving him coverage--AND AT THE SAME TIME they're denoucing him, ridiculing him, trying to tear him down. It's unimaginable that they could do this, but thats the way the media works today. Yet another reason why media ownership reform is one of the most important issues facing the country today. They are masters at it and there objective is to get us chasing our tails.
If they seem to promote Dean today it is only to get the others to attack him as the front-runner. Then they can “cover” the story and have a chance to repeat several times the negative comments.
Dean is the one that they fear because he is a populist that can bring more voters into the system, and that is poison to their election campaign.

once the narrative is set in the minds of the general public, ie., people, then it is easier for the media to manipulate and define through imagry the terms of the social and political debate.

its true that kucinich's, braun's and sharpton's messages are being readily dismissed, because to admit that what they are saying is valid undermines the ability of corporate media to be able to facily manufacture the consent of the governed.

the 3 aforementioned people have raised serious quesions that the media does not want to cover and investigate for validity because it would lead to questioning the current narrative set already about how america works.

instead, they have focused on the marginal policy differences between dean, clark, kerry, and edwards which, if truth be told are so close in terms of the the consequences of their implimentation as to be considered essentially identical.

put it this way, the differences between the apples and oranges of the policy stances of dean, clark, kerry and edwards are inconsequrental compared to the walrus-like policy stances of kucinich, braun, and sharpton.

it the difference between different fruits versus those between fruits and mammals.

The only spin is to try to make all the Democratic candidates look bad. Every news story about any Democratic candidate or covering any of the Democratic debates invariably concludes with a short "statement" or "interview" with some strategically placed GOP observer. For example the ABC news radio story on the debate today ended with a statement from a "Republican onlooker" who stated, in response to the Bush bashing that of course occured, that "Americans don't want pessimism."
