Bush campaign video: When Angry Democrats Attack!

I just received an email from the Bush campaign, with this video showing the "angry Democrats".

Hilarious! They show Dean yelling, Gephardt ranting about the "miserable failure", Kerry demanding "Regime change", and ends with "Support the President's agenda for a stronger, more prosperous America."

Dean has the best "angry man" takes, but this is obviously the main defenese of the Bush campaign, that we are nothing but angry Bush-haters, and have no positive agenda.

No matter which Dem we run, they are going to harp on this; all of them have repeatedly talked about how terrible Bush is, and they've apparently settled on this "don't vote for the Dems, they're haters" line.

Never mind that ALL of the Dems have presented excellent plans for rebuilding America. Sigh.

But check out the video, it's funny. Especially the soothing voice and background music at the end when Bush is shown. Makes you feel good all over.

I heard great speeches and commentaries, then people like Chris Matthews turn around and say "Where's the Dems?" The media has to report what Democrats are saying or people won't know. The Democrats were speaking, the media wasn't reporting. Just like Nancy Pelosi said a few months ago, they call press conferences and nobody shows up. Or the gossip column politics we get right now. Who said the "f" word. Clark said "move on". Dean is angry. The media quotes 5 words out of a 500 word speech and people eat it up like those are the important words in electing a President.

There was no decent media reporting before the war, there's no decent media reporting on our primaries, and there won't be any decent media reporting next year unless half the U.S. starts demanding it and stops buying into media driven, mass marketed campaigns.

I think GOP anger is over-exposed in the American psyche. A lot of GOPers are just angry all of the time. When they show anger it doesn't really mean much.

Dems on the other hand are slow to anger. If Dems actually show anger, it is unusual. I think swing voters and even independant-minded conservatives are not likely to simply dismiss it. They are more likely to feel increased interest in the reasons behind the anger.

Anger is not going to win the white house for us, not matter how good it feels or how much we enjoy it. The public is fickle and more likely to say "well I didn't vote for x because he was just too mean" than to say "I didn't vote for x because I disagreed with his economic and/or foriegn policy."

People here keep acting like elections are about issues, and that's probably why democrats loose so much. Republicans know that elections aren't about issues - they are personality and popularity contests about which candidate can make individuals feel the most comfortable.

It would be nice if we could seek in a candidate with some good stances on issues through the backdoor, but issues don't win elections and neither does the "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" approach.

I agree that anger is an issue that can be used against us if we do not respond. I would suggest a counter ad agreeing with the Repub ad:

We are angry that he has spent the largest surplus in history and has given us the largest deficits in history. We are angry at his arrogant displays and his PR politics. 37. It's a dilemma.

Bush is the worst President we've ever had. If we don't criticize him and his policies, our campaign boils down to a shrug. We can't win by arguing over what's the best way to subjugate Iraq and the rest of the Islamic world, or how best to pay for trillion-dollar tax cuts for the rich. We have to come out against those things and others like them in the first place.

Likewise, Bush is a phenomenal liar. His dad lied a lot, and as for Reagan, you could always tell when he was lying because his lips were moving. But Bush is far-and-away the most audacious liar ever to disgrace the presidency. If we give him a pass on that, it leaves us without much to argue with, because his lies equate his policies with security, prosperity, peace, justice, and the American Way.

But we can't win just by calling Bush a liar and a failed president. We need to finesse this issue very carefully, and always combine condemnations of the Bush administration and its lies with substance about what needs to be said and done instead. Even then, the hostile media is likely to pick apart the sound bites and only show the negative stuff. If we're going to win, we have to teach the electorate to distrust the media.

I'm of all minds on this thread. The ad primarily goes at Dean, and I think the Hitlerian touches will, unfortunately, work. The Gephardt and Kerry "anger" was far more sedate, and might backfire - people might think "I've been THAT angry before. Is that the best they have?"
And, after all, Gephardt says that Bush is a miserable failure!

I also agree with the posters who notice that Clark is not included. I think the Republicans saw how Clark handled David Assman on FOX and are afraid of him.

You can't say Republicans don't learn. If you recall Clinton's brilliant '95-96 ad campaign against "the Gingrich-Dole Congress," the clips were photoshopped. The images of Republicans were all black and white, slightly out of focus, and grainy. If I recall correctly, even the speed was adjusted to make them seem slightly slow. It all added up to a subliminally unpleasant visual image, courtesy of film editors.

The pubbies complained at the time that doctoring photos that way was a low blow, but that didn't stop the ads, which were highly effective. Looks like imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

This trend bothers me more than a little. Hollywood is getting very proficient at splicing real people and events into movies, which can dangerously blur the line between reality and fantasy. The DNC dabbled in the same game some months back when it ran animated cartoons of Bush & Co. on its website. While a cartoon is obviously a creative fiction, the technique still put invented words directly into an opponent's mouth. This kind of thing can get dangerous really fast.

There is plenty on the record with which to pound an opponent without inventing things. Our politics is foul enough already without making up quotes and doctoring photos to demonize opponents.

This letter was in today's LTEE in the Cincinnati Enquirer - but it must be talking about another ad. There has not been one positive letter about * in the letters for quite some time that I've read - all negative - which is pretty huge for Cincinnati. People are catching on - very slowly - but they are catching on.

The recent Republican National Committee's TV commercial is as astounding as it is frightening. It seems they are cultivating a "with us or against us" mentality. The message urges the American voters to contact their elected officials to support a "preemptive self-defense" policy. Does this mean that those in opposition of this policy are un-American? Are only those who march in lock step with the administration worthy? Does disagreement equate with disloyalty?

History warns that "lock step" is not far from "goose step" and that "preemptive self-defense" is but a step away from warmongering.
