Man, I'm still stunned by a phone conversation I had with my dad in Wisconsin tonight. He asked why Mari and I were considering moving to Canada, and I told him we don't want to be citizens any longer of a bully nation.

"Well," he said, "everyone has a right to live where they want, but I think that's just stupid." It was a very short, cold conversation, and the chill was amplified--in my mind--by the fact that my son has to be deployed overseas (Iraq?) in less than a month.

My dad's never called me stupid before, and that threw me for a loop. He said some other hurtful things on top of that, and I'm still reeling, not knowing why he was so uncharacteristically blunt tonight.

But I guess I've digressed. Sorry.
