Cheney satisfies bloodlust by shooting 70 pheasants (Canned Hunt)
Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 12:58 AM by rmpalmer
This is Dicky Mellon Scaife country. Local TV reported Cheney's party of 9 shot 417 birds

http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/2690219/detail.html

Vice President Dick Cheney hunted duck and pheasant Monday at the Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Channel 4's Marcie Cipriani reported.

<snip>

"We release pheasants off a hill, and they shoot them," club employee Scott Wakefield said. "They all stay in their blinds up ahead of us. The other guys like me, we have our dogs and we run them. We stand below (the hunters), and every bird they shoot, our dogs retrieve them."

Mark Bolish, another club employee, said the vice president shot about 70 birds.

"He seemed like he was very happy when he was done, so we knew we did our job, too," Bolish said.

1. Put and shoot bird hunting- nothing new
Everybody does this nowadays. Raising and stocking quail or pheasant for hunting is big business.

9. Damn right!
Can these people care any LESS than they do?

Canned hunts are only popular among sorry-assed, rich, losers.

A lot of hunters are offended by this.

11. It doesn't disgust me
No different than dumping out a bunch of trout and jerking them back out.

Canned? Maybe. But I've seen people do it- mainly with bobwhite quail and chukar.

45. Give me a break, there is a big difference between a GUN and
a hook. Besides, most fisherman either eat their catch or put them back in.

5. I misread the subject line as "peasants"
and, frighteningly, I wasn't really shocked or surprised.

I clicked on the thread because I was curious as to how Cheney would ever come in contact with 70 peasants.

25. It's called tower shooting
Done a long time by rich folks of all stripes.

You sit in a blind and shoot the pheasants or chukar as they fly by.

Not really hunting actually.

I mean could he have chucked them into the garbage
or is their a process of donation if cheney didn't
want his birds ?

That's what local news reported. They released 500 pheasants, 417 sacrificed their lives for Cheney's group. BTW, an unknown number of mallard ducks were also killed.

rich hunters must think that if the commoners usually take 3 birds in a hunt they should be entitled to 70.

22. It's a private club - I believe Mellons instrumental in its founding
Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 01:32 AM by rmpalmer
I don't know if they still do, but horsey set would have fox hunts there.

Here's some info I found on the net.

The Club is the heart and soul of what Pittsburghers often call "Mellon country" - the area about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh where many members of the Mellon family and their friends bought country retreats. Yes, that Mellon family, founders and financiers of many of America's great business enterprises - Mellon Bank, Gulf Oil, Alcoa, Koppers and General Motors to name just a few. Richard Beatty Mellon originally had a country retreat where he and his friends could visit for sport and relaxation. The group organized the Rolling Rock Club in 1917. The Clubhouse was completed in 1921 and today is surrounded by a golf course, tennis courts, a swimming pool and bridle paths all set in a 13,000 acre preserve. The Club even has its own fish hatchery and raises pheasants and wild ducks for shooting season.

27. Good Company
About ten years ago, I visited a castle in the Chezch Republic that once belonged to the Arch Duke Ferdenand of Prussia - you know, the one who got things going in 1914? Well, he was an avid hunter, and there was practically no square inch of wall space that wasn't covered with dead animals, sometimes whole families of animals stuffed and mounted. There were thousands of dead creatures on the walls, and the tour guides, while calling Ferdenand somewhat of a psychopath, told us that once he and Kaiser William, his uncle, shot 1400 animals a piece in one afternoon. They didn't even stop to retrieve their trophies, having an army of minions retrieve the dead.

I guess that Chaney and the Kaiser and the Arch Duke have more than just world domination in common.

30. Cheney is actually out walking?
And holding a gun, no less? I'm surprised. This guy is usually hiding out in his bunker. He must have needed some cheap thrills.

He should take better care of himself. I read recently that he has a hole in his aorta. I think that's why he hides out so much.

32. That is excessive.
I have no problem with sportsmen. It is good to go out and hunt a deer or duck or whatever. These canned hunts are nothing but mindless killing.

Oh well, maybe seeing the 400-some dead birds will let them see in perspective how many men and women died in Iraq.
