Stay in touch with me. Send me your email.

My 15 year old (soon to be 16) is committed to going to school and remaining in Canada. The wife and I are looking into methods of cheap housing (say "SANCTUARY") close to London, St. Thomas and Guelph; all university towns.

As we plan to be IN CANADA within 2 years, we are going to be well positioned to start what Deb and I are tongue in cheek calling "The US Refuge Sanctuary Movement." This of course currently is just us, but we WILL get our boys out of the draft, and if you are of like mind, STAY IN TOUCH WITH ME. Maybe we can actually do some good.

1. One bump for the sake of argument
You may not agree with my feeling that Bush will win, and that even if he doesn't, the Republican Congress will prevail, but the draft will become a reality, Dean or no Dean.

You may want to just keep my email handy; I'll send it to anyone who asks. I will be setting up a special address for it.

2. I'm not going to be in your position
but I do think that just in case Bu$h steals the election again it's not a bad idea to have a backup plan.

4. I wish this was not necessary.
I see Bush as Sulla crossing the Rubicon with his legions. Do you really think the PNAC/RNC/BFEE will allow the "kiddies" as they see us to take the wheel again? I don't think so.

All Republics succumb to factionalism eventually. There has never been one that lasted this long so far in recorded history. As we see the gulf between Right and Left grow to a gaping chasm, we are given a preview of the demise of the Republic.

3. i would take your email address
I have 2 sons 17 and 21. I guess they could be going we have been very concerned,I don't know who to be more worried about. I guess it depends on how quickly they get it going but it looks as though my younger boy is the more likely. Are you only going to be there for two years? oh your going to be there within two years. I'd like to keep in touch if we cannot get anything on our own going...

6. Canada
We were looking into purchasing a second home/cottage on a lake in Canada. They are not all that expensive compared to real estate costs here. I am lucky...my 13 year old has autism and my 12 year old has adhd...but you are right to be planning ahead for this. (never thought I'd feel lucky about having handicapped children)

8. My kids are ADHD too.
But I sent the info, all the same. Depending on how desperately the military needs bodies, they may alter standards. I'm not taking chances.

16. What about children that have both ADD and...
tourettes syndrom? I know someone whose child suffers from both and that parent is very worried about the possibility of the draft being reinstated.

19. I think it depends upon the
need for consistent/maintenance meds...particularly in a field situation. I think the military may currently be turning away recruits with ADD and other neurological conditions that could possibly hinder their judgement, should they not be able to get their prescribed meds, etc. Should the world situation worsen, the military might begin to overlook this in the future, depending on how depleted the forces become.

26. May depend
on the severity of the attention deficit. Nicolai, adopted from Russia, has pretty severe attention deficit. As his meds wear off he whistles uncontrollably and literally climbs the walls. Still those parents with children not as severely affected should probably make alternate plans.

12. My son turns 18 the day after the 2004 election
We've considered moving to Canada too. We meet the criteria. But it is so difficult to give up on things here. My younger son has Asthma so he would likely be excused. My oldest is the one I'm worried about.

I have to say sending him to Canada would be a last resort. But it is certianly on the table.

13. What makes you believe Canada would provide sanctuary?
If you are emigrating I understand. But I seem to remember something about the Canadians not intending to harbor draft-dodgers.

Of course I am fuzzy on all this, but my point is, wade in and check out the bottom before you start diving.

22. The wife and I are emmigrating to Canada...
or is it immigrating? I always get those two reversed.

Anyway, I don't care whether it's legal or not. We figured out that it will take about $250/month US to keep each of 3 boys holed up in a 3 bedroom mobile home with food, clothing, rent for the space, etc.

My boys are not going to war. Period. I don't care how I stop it, I'm going to stop it.

17. Don't go to Canada! Stay and protest!
If every draft-age young man stayed and resisted the draft -- imagine the power of those media images! Thousands of American boys being rounded up and arrested. Thousands of American boys shouting their opposition to the war. It would be far more effective than running from the country. How long do you think this war would carry on if the country saw its own sons herded by nazi-like draft boards into jails? There wouldn't be enough cells to hold all these young men.

I have two draft-age sons. We've talked about going to Canada or Europe. But I'm beginning to think that the bravest course of action would be to simply resist.

18. That is actually
the most likely thing to happen. That is what my boys would prefer but the thought of prison is pretty scary. They will have to make their own decisions of course and I will back them whatever it is but it is nice to have a backup plan. My worry is that if Bush* does get elected or re selected these kids will not get the normal "draft dodger" treatment and if the RW stays in control how long they might have to stay locked up. As you say, too many may be protesting to house in the prisons. It is just so scary to even think about all of this but we must.

20. Help me, Tyler Durden!
I do want to get in touch with you, but I don't know how to send a PM here. My two girls both have ways to get out of the country if things get bad, through contacts they have made for foreign study. But my son is 22, and I am afraid for him. Please tell me how to PM you.

24. This is a pretty good article on going to Canada....
Could U.S. draft evaders be extradited from Canada now?
<http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_141.html>

The author makes no bones about what he thinks of people going to Canada to avoid the draft, but I get the feeling that the author does not have any draft-age children at home. However, he does provide good information in the article.

Excerpts:

"...Now, getting down to your question: there is no treaty between the U.S. and Canada that permits U.S. authorities to haul your ass, or any other portion of your anatomy, back down here for draft evasion. The existing treaties, which antedate the Vietnam era by a considerable stretch, permit extradition only for offenses that are recognized as crimes in Canada. Since Canada has no draft, it has no such thing as draft evasion. On the other hand, you can by extradited for desertion once you've actually been inducted into the military."

...SNIP...

"Treaty or no treaty, emigrating to Canada to avoid the draft nowadays is much more difficult than it was 15 years ago, owing to the fact that Canadian immigration policies are stricter."

...SNIP...

"Ever since the Canadian economy began to go sour in the mid-70s, there's been resentment of U.S. citizens taking Canadian jobs, and I'm told that at present the chances of a well-educated young male getting landed immigrant status are extremely small. In any event, the process is extremely time-consuming."

...SNIP...

"As a practical matter--not saying I approve of this, you understand, but it's one of the options--the easiest thing may be just to stay where you are, don't register, and keep your yap shut. The government may never find you. On the other hand, if they do find you, it's one of the easiest things to get a conviction on. Accordingly, before you do anything drastic, I strongly recommend contacting one of the draft counseling services established in most major cities."
