Vice Presidential Nomination
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 02:34 AM by ermoore
Dean or whoever (though it looks like it'll be Dean). Anyways, considering that pretty much all the candidates are rather lackluster, does the eventual nominee have to choose a Veep from among the losers, or could they choose someone who didn't enter the race? And I know that they could, but will they?

And then, who would be good to nominate? There are much better candidates outside the nine running for the presidential bid. Any ideas?

2. I think that it is the nominee's best interest to get one of the other Dem
candidates, b/c their are already enough names for people to remember, don't bring in a whole new person. I want a Clark/Dean, Dean/Clark ticket more than anything. Either ticket has landslide written all over it PERIOD

3. Personally, picking the #2 candidate for VP is a strong move
Whoever the #2 candidate turns out to be...

It's a good want to unite the party, however to answer your question, no the eventual nominee does not have to choose from amoung the other candidates - he/she can choose whoever he/she wants.

4. They can choose anyone - and almost always have:
(Besides which that it wouldn't make sense for them to have to pick someone from the pack given that sometimes there are only a couple of candidates, such as Gore and Bradley in 2000, and also sometimes people run unopposed, though that's a little more rare.)

Bush - Cheney
Gore - Lieberman
Dole - Kemp
Clinton - Gore
Bush - Quayle
Dukakis - Benson
Mondale - Ferraro
Carter - Mondale
Ford - Rockerfeller
Nixon - Agnew
Humphrey - Muskie

Some exceptions:
Reagan - Bush
Kennedy - Johnson
Stevenson - Kefauver (I think.)

7. You're right about Kefauver.
Kefauver won in NH in '52 and '56, IIRC.

However, Ford never picked Rockefeller as his running mate. He picked Dole in 1976.

5. I know it's possible . . .
I know that it's perfectly "legal" and not against the rules or tradition for them to do so, I'm just wondering if they will this year. It seems like all the talk (at least here) is about a Dean/Clark, Clark/Dean, Clark/Kerry, Dean/Edwards, Dean/Graham, Kerry/Gephardt, etc. ticket. I think there are much stronger candidates not running than there are running.

And Graham, of course, did enter the presidential nomination race thingy.

8. A couple possibilities:
Russ Feingold - not scared of a fight, fiscally responsible, great guy all around.

Max Cleland - the man needs a job, no matter what it is. This is the best. I want to see him on national TV, standing across form Dick Cheney, say, "Look at me, Dick. You know how many other boys you've done this to? You know how much your pockets have been lined because of those boys?" I must see the look on Cheney's face. I must.

Bob Graham - will need a job. if for nothing else than Florida and southern votes.

John Edwards - he will need a job too. great young guy, a good future for the party.

Maybe a woman? - Madeleine Albright (Though she wasn't born in the U.S.), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Nancy Pelosi, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Feinstien? Just an out there idea.
